“Perhaps Art Is The New Black”

Seems, as of late, art may be the only thing holding its value. Down here near Wall Street things have taken a toll on all but the artists. As a matter of fact, the artists I am talking to say they are doing ok throughout all of this economic downturn. Hopefully people are beginning to realise that art is a tangible thing that you can enjoy every single day if you like. I suppose, as artists, we have to face the fact that if people buy what they have a positive feeling toward that it will continue to feed their soul. Maybe at this time we do need to feed our souls and not our worries about the extraneous in our overburdened society. Perhaps art is the new black Maybe the very things happening now will make people realise how nurturing art truly is.

  1. From your lips to whoever’s ears, John. In the past week and the coming two, I will be shipping art to California, Atlanta and New York to participate in exhibitions. This is no small expense as you know. A friend of mine’s portfolio took an 80% hit and he bailed out of the stock market completely last Friday. He says the artwork he owns (including) mine has more value than it did a couple of years ago and is the only he can be sure will increase through these horrible times.

  2. I hear ya. I have had two art appraisers call me in the last month. Today I will be shipping a commission to San Francisco and a show to Charleston SC and shipping a show to Nashville in a couple weeks and a new commission in Chattanooga last Tuesday so I think we may be onto something. Of course, it is the season too and I am glad it is busy myself. Nice to be busy is all I can say since the summer was pretty much a bust for most artists I know.

  3. Here is an excerpt from this recently posted blog entry (http://www.nuwireinvestor.com/blogs/investorcentric/2008/09/financial-crisis-expands-where-should.html) entitled The Financial Crisis Expands: Where Should You Invest Now?

Invest in art it has always been a good investment. . I have tried to advise my clients over the years as to the value of collecting art. The one great thing is that there is virtually an investment for every income level. You don’t have to purchase at the top nor do you want to. The key is to find a good artist that is making a career of being an artist, Not a part-timer.

  4. Thanks Glenn,
I think art is kind of like investing in yourself. Not unlike say going to a spa or eating right but with art all you have to do is enjoy it after you buy it. It gives back over and over again. Art just makes sense because it is what perpetually feeds us and I feel that art makes us better people.

See what Christopher Wheat says on the InvestorCentric blog at http://www.nuwireinvestor.com/blogs/investorcentric/2008/09/financial-crisis-expands-where-should.htm Eventhough part of his post is a plug, it just makes sense.

  5. they say that when the economy is bad, and people are staying home, they tend to invest in decorating and art- i remember right after 9/11 in nyc it was one of the busiest time for art sales i can remember. In the past weeks, like the rest of you, i thought, “in this economy, how am i going to make it”- with that i sold a big piece yesterday, have work going into a show here in nyc opening next thursday, and licensed another dozen images for posters today- is it just the timing of our ebb and flow of income as artists, or is it that real estate and the stock market seem like lost causes today?
