“On Being a Cheerful Giver. Giving Has Its Benefits”

My charity work is about volunteering my time as well as giving my art. Over the years, I have been asked to give to literally hundreds of charities. At some point, I decided on a particular number of gifts per year that work for me in my practice. I consider these pieces gifts and they should be treated and acknowledged as such. An artists time and energy is as important as any part of a charity art event. There are so many worthwhile charities out there that can benefit from artists.  Every artist I know has a small group of charities who can depend on them for some support. This is very important. Giving of yourself is obviously the greatest gift you can give but we don’t all have time in our busy lives to do this so giving something of yourself fills you up and makes you a cheerful giver.

Always ask that a minimal price or reserve be attached to each piece you donate because your supporters, as well as, your galleries depend on you to watch out for them too. A respectable charity respects their artists because they understand how this mutual good is further enhanced when artists and charities work together.

Be informed that a set price per piece benefits the charity as well as the artists and the artist’s careers. This should always be considered and respected. When supporters come to a charity event they should come with an open heart and with the best intentions for the artists and the charity and should never come to any event thinking they will get something for “little of nothing.” “Stinking thinking” only hurts the relationship between the artist and the charity. When we all give a little more we all get a little more and the benefits are huge and continue long after an event is over. I have worked with some charities for over two decades and they, like myself, know its a mutual affair.

Consider giving when you believe in the source especially when they believe in you.

  1. nice piece. i think you mean “its” not “it’s” in the title.

  2. My faux pas. I was up rather late putting this together for today so thanks for watching my back and thanks for the comment. I just think it is so important for artists to know that they can make such a difference with their work.

  3. Like you, I am asked to donate pieces and I pick them carefully. I am a big supporter of Planed Parenthood, The Humane Society and Doctors without BOrders. In between, I donate to smaller silent auctions within my immediate community. It feels good and it’s a subtle way to market without beating people over the head! ;)
