“It’s About Being In The Moment”

At this time of year we are inundated with things, memories, people and places. All vying for our attention. As artists, this can be a great time to infuse energy into our practice but we should also understand that this can also disperse our personal energy. Being it the moment helps us to gain perspective. Events change how you make your work. Sometimes I find that being still and just listening sometimes helps me out. Other times, I find myself on the subway with my eyes closed due to overstimulation. What works best for you should be brought into focus, especially this time of year. What works for you? Maybe we can all gain something from each other.

  1. a small pad and a pen to write things down as i think of them- when you’ve got so much going on in your head all the time, it helps when you sit down to have a reminder. i am officially in my 40’s.

  2. I’ve been reading “The Power of Now” by Eckhart Tolle…just reading the first 50 pages or so has really helped me to identify when those voices inside my head start talking, how lacking in value they are, and how to let them drift away.

I’m not big on “self-help” books, but this one is definitely worth the 10 bucks.

  3. I have read that book at least 5 times and I refer to it more than I care to admit. Lisa, I can safely say it is one of the best books I have read and it has really changed me as an artist and a person.

  4. I started taking a ridiculous amount of acting classes at a very young age. Intense acting teachers and directors would get on their knees, fists in the air and zealously say, “Be in the moment, Sheila. Be in the moment.”

So I grew up with the concept of being in the now, in the present, in the MOMENT that has served me well in my adult, non-acting ways.

One of my secrets for both inspiring creativity and keeping me sane during hectic times is to change up my routine. Take a different path to work, wash my face before I brush my teeth, eat breakfast for dinner… Order something I never would. Anything and everything to keep me feeling alive. Even during hectic times, these little acts of change remind me to stay fresh and to stay in the moment.

Another obvious trick is to stop and simply breathe.

    Happy Holidays!

  5. Sheilarrose, you make a great point to just keep changing things up to make us feel more alive. It is indeed the little things that make such a big difference in how we live in the moment.

  6. what works for me? haha! the old saying’ if you want something done, give it to a busy man.’ that’s me. the busier the more.
