“Two Ears, One Mouth, Listen, Listen, Speak”

My grandfather used to tell me this as a child. He grew up in an Amish household and held these words as gospel. Whenever I would get so caught up in the moment with excitement, happiness or even frustration, he would say these very simple words to me,”Two ears, one mouth, listen, listen, speak.”

At this time of year, with all the hustle and bustle, it is easy to get so excited as to get caught up in the moment and become insensitive to others who may not be as fortunate or who may just need an ear. Seems, we are sometimes not really listening to surroundings. Artists are, after all, the movers and shakers in our culture and we grow through our ability to listen to what is going on around us and turning this knowledge to make something fantastic. This holiday season lets try to do more listening before we speak, we may just stumble upon that gift that leads us to that next great step.

  1. Wise words. Here is another form of that wisdom that I heard when I was young.

When mouth is open then mind is shut.

  2. Oh but I really, really like to speak.

    Yet, I will listen.

  3. two eyes and a face. look, look, then smile.

  4. I adore this phrase and I’ve never heard it before. Thank you!

  5. I think I have used it all my life. As my grandfather grew up in a totally different environment from most folks, these truisms became part of the texture of their culture and was passed down from generation to generation. I attribute it to him and he had so many more that I may share at some point. In a way, using his phases honors him as he was such a huge part of my life as I was growing up and even now.

  6. Oh this is soooo good, and oh it can be so hard to accomplish. Thank you so much for sharing!
