I was eager to melt into winter solstice … heavy dreaming,  and attuning with deeper, veiled parts of self.  This is a reflective time of year for me. I withdraw, into collecting myself, remembering, and psychical blues and purples are common this time of year. I was caught in a small exoteric eddy of  blue as well. I can readily see why many suffer “holiday blues”, for different reasons.  A series of drawings was announced by that panel back in November ..which became, over a few subsequent weeks, a small gallery, of  insperiences, scapes and personal reflections. I am sharing them here because these too are musical .. and accompanied/inspired by others’ writing and photography, and of course musicality.

While I was thoroughly immersed these several recent weeks of academic year start-up/classrooms, post-graduate course work, and cobbling/writing a small and intense educational manual .. lots of music and dreams came through,  some ideas went round ..

BTW .. when I started teaching, some 15 years ago .. 25 students was considered a reasonable class size …  I now have 40 students enrolled in my regular academic sections.  And my actual compensation has been cut by 15% in that same time. I wonder how things are looking for my counterparts at over at Halliburton?  KBR? I hear that F-16’s are too expensive to deploy lately .. Fleet Week excepted ..  Maybe additional savings can be realized if my classes were similarly taught by .. drones?

Ahh… the sounds of post-Iniki Kauai .. the d e v a s t a t i n g storm liberated all the roosters and chickens ( a la head-for-the-shelter-Ma!) … so the pre- and early dawn  bird-song is a lot like anywhere in Latin America (albeit sans fire-crackers, amen)

Earlier in the Spring we were alerted and attracted to the work of Tepairu Manea www.tikiripolynesianinstruments.com and his beloved wife/collaborator Jo, in their work in organizing their 10^th annual Heiva I Kauai Ia Orana Tahiti. We contacted the pair and offered our volunteer help around their celebration on Kauai. They welcomed us warmly. XO! to Pat. They are amazing. It was amazing.. two full days of magnificent soloists and thumping /swaying dance troupes (some @ 40 dancers strong) , trade-winds, rain squalls, sun, and rainbows.  Fabulous accompaniment by traditional Tahitian drummers and multi-instrument ensembles All enthralling, from powerful hakas to joyous percussive seated partner dances.    A few images follow:

After the opening kava (awa) ceremony, where to my surprise I was welcomed as an honored and served as a guest among dignitaries … Kumu Maile ( above) and the Mayor of Kauai,  Bernard P. Carvalho among others. Bula Vinaka Dallas ! As feeling returned to my mouth and throat, I happily jumped in as “opala man”.. the trash-collector, all-day,both-days, and I have perhaps never been more energized to perform a  manual task. Hard at work and non-stop, I got to see the whole show from every angle in the house  ( Kapa’a Beach Park ).

The evening following the heiva we gathered as a small group (of volunteers) at a beach pavilion in Wailua, the regular home to Jo’s hula halau , and thoroughly enjoyed a meal together, along with a live musical ensemble-surprise, organized by Auntie Stella … skilled voices, guitars and ukes, which got all the women dancing hula. Beautiful!

Kauai has a rather great community radio station, KKCR, with a primary transmitter and two repeaters, cable, and web stream to service the whole island. The station is literally in the jungle just off Kuhio Highway, around a few bends in Kauai clay-dirt roads, with KCCR hang-about roosters/chickens, naturally (below, center faddaclukka)  .  Respect! to GM/Engineer Dean Rogers( below, top) and Don Mussel, along with the entire volunteer staff. A large part of the daily offering is Hawaiiana/ Pacific music, and this is a good thing. If not tuned to KKCR we swooned over and over again to just a few CD’s on repeat, by Uncle Moe Keale (Live in Waikiki),  Dennis Pavao ( Na Mele Heno Heno ), and Waipuna (Mana’o Pili Waipuna). After a few days on the South side around Po’ipu, we settled into our Haena-Hanale-Na Pali North Shore house stay. I was thrilled to find some chunky surf on all sides of the island to engage me in hand-boarding and paddle-surfing. We were bathed in pure light and water, falls and rainbows …. Drowsed  through paka paka rain on the roof … sailed or swam among sea turtles, dolphins, and rays ..  walked and upwelled in the Na Pali … anointing our selves and souls in wild awapuhi. Something of real Polynesian-Hawaiian Spirit is alive and well in the faces and places of Kauai. We gratefully look forward to returning, and reimmersion.

Up the coast, and amid Cali’s curvaceous slopes, worldOne festival 2011 is complete .. a grand annual round of contemplation, drawing, seeding, planning, gestation, construction, scraped knuckles, collaboration, exertion, gyration, celebration, recession, exhaustion, and the gazillion errands, in reverse !

It takes a village to raise a proper community festival .. and here’s a foto of the assembled  community of worldOneateers ..  what I mean to say by “proper” is the SPIRIT, around what purpose/intention in which a festival takes place, and the community investment in its eso- and exoteric outcome .. towards relatedness, vision, renewal. Commercial festivals can lean that way, and often, miss that mark.

Now packing-down, repairing, critiquing, note-taking,… ultimately .. giving thanks that we were able to do it gain … post-festival rest-disorder ( the adrenaline-pumped- 24-7 list really, really takes time to wind down.. like my popping up at 2 am, just having to get notes on paper..( like making sure to source “t-post safety caps” and Balinese ceremonial umbrellas )

And yes, I have already tendered invites for 2012. LOL …

This Spring season has been particularly beautiful and inspiring in various ways, eso and exoterically  … great tides are surging .. and I am surfing / riding in the mix … seeking and soaking up all nuances … all much needed help and whisperings , as I otherwise navigate the great toothsome cogs and gears of BIG HUMM and DRUMM or, STURM AND DRANG  ..

Its been a few weeks since writing … wrapping up the spring-fevered-mytwitface-fatigue-distracted school term, and the festival is ramping up- up-UP .. my need to retreat and rewind is compelling, and I am finding great satisfaction and joy in escaping to snowshoe ( again, UPUPUPer still)  for a few hours and boarding back down .. I have found a “secret” personal, snow-bound haven in the sierras pretty nearby …  the only company there is birdsong, tumbling creeks, my thrubbing heartbeat-in-my-ears, and bear tracks.

Almost needless to say, these precious hours of alpine calm, are wrapped in hours of throbbing music driving hither and yon .. which I also cherish, as I can immerse, and get to and through all the material I have had “ on deck” ..  the short list in recent weekly sojourns, and on home decks has included :

Phillip Glass, Meredith Monk, PC Munoz, Ray Le Montagne, Alison Krauss and Union Station, Dr. Bronner, Kevin Yazzie, Whitney Meyer, GOGOL BORDELLO, LL Cool J, Karen O and The Kids, Foreign Legion, John Prine, Joan Jeanreneaud,  Lupe Fiasco,  J. Cole,     Caribou. Oh, and Perry Como.

All added with élan, in our little worldOne kinda mixology .. you’ll notice I refrain from critiques, nuff said if we added it. Some stuff is so bawdy, it cannot make the FM cut, and are otherwise mind-or dance floor club sizzlers.  Givin the devil his/her due and otherwise, AMEN.

We can highly and heartily recommend that doc on Doctor Bronner..  Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soap Box .. in the worldOneremix with LOV.. a memory .. sugaring with John in Vermont circa ’77.  A week of sweaty, boot-sucking sugar sap-gathering, and chopping wood .. heaven with blisters. The week is up and the women arrive at the shack. Beautiful women, John’s girlfriend, her younger sis and her friend.  We eat well, low on the food chain and strictly local/organic .. the fire in the dry sauna is stoked, and we sweat and laugh together in the frozen  thawing Vermont moon–steeped starlight, lunging out through the snow to immerse in a creek, sitting on logs, steaming in the moonlight till the need to warm up drove us inside once more .. in rounds .. wow ..

I still can smell the peppermint DR. B’s we bathed with that night, the first real bath in a week.   Its been a fixture in my life since, for good reason. I did get to speak with him @ 25 years ago. He was very present, cordial, engaging and yes, he had just finished his accustomed run along-side a moving car.

We shared our recent days with friends/collaborators .. yesterday at SF Carnaval  in the morning and the afternoon at a Marin Greek Festival  .. the weather was startlingly bright and fresh all day … as were countless beautiful sounds, movements, textures, tastes and colors … rootsy, traditional, sublime, familial, neighborly and yes, sexy ….a lot like spring flowers in a new fangled fantasia .. we made a long play radio especial this am … of our Carnaval whirligig … FUUUN !

Just about once a year, lately.I write and follow up personally, on what I trust are incisive and revealing  appeals letters to broadcasters about seemingly obvious themes in media literacy …  goodness knows we seem to finally be coming to some new terms

With sugary-salty foods manufacturers..

Most recently, I reached out to the owner operators of  a “dance / POP”  station about the value of messaging inside a recent Ke$ha tune .. personally I’d rather just get to and stay in the good stuff… light with a taste of dark, thank you  (what we teach and broadcast everyday).

The easy duck is for commercial operators is “Geez, we hope you will not change the station, but you have choices”  .. and/or  “ we listen to lyrics and follow FCC rules”.  Utter Bullsh–t.  Let’s unf–k, that sscchall we ?

That’s the same side–step used by food industry giants over decades , and you can see what a national health crisis (obesity/diabetes) and informed-citizen-actioneer mobilization are now accomplishing. While the giant corps get busy white-washing their role or complicity, and finally are draaaagged to some new level of conscience and compliance.  They’ll still make money. How about some personal and enviro-health as a premise and by-product. Stunning revelation, to be sure.

I know , I know , crass, ( salty, sticky-sweet) racy or vulgar material has its place. Remember that lovely taste of dark juice, previously mentioned. But really, where is any craft or what we would agree is some health-seeking  soulfullness.  Especially in a POP all ages setting.I understand it’s hard to make great porn.

With the slope slippin the way it has, digressively,  over decades, extreme materialism screeching away ( and to countless  inevitable crashes all around) ..  scandalizing the image of younger and younger girls.

Why is the blatantly soft-porn and obscene openly promoted, while karate moms or soccer dads shrug? Overwhelm, I suspect.

Ke$ha is now on ,officially, her “Sleaze Tour” …

hot and dangerous, running this town just like a club, we are superstars … in hot pants   .. dumb , dancing till we’re numb,  looking sick and sexy fine ,  forever young,  don’t mess with us … Jesus in my neck-a-lace.. ( that lyric perhaps best word play , worst image)

I KNOW there is great music getting produced .. but it doesn’t find its way into mainstream broadcast media, excepot ten tears later on Jimmy Kimmel spot light. That kinda resistance keeps us socially retrograde.

Neon and naked excepted, bright lights are typically flatly rejected, dismissed with the outrageous suggestion,  at the end of the day, you gotta give the people what they want.

< Sic: for forty years, under this logic, the people apparently wanted obesity, diabetes, etc..>

Well, if the over-ganda has precluded real choices,  education, and critical thinking regarding same, the people will choose, poorly, from a pair of options presented by the promoter / propagandist.   It helps if you obfuscate and /or outright lie ( ahem .. we never advertised tobacco to youth) .

Broadcasters have shucked off and danced away from any real civic sense, localism, and responsibility and have become ( like oil companies, tobacco companies, food companies ), vehicles for accrual of personal / corporate wealth . Our civic life and federal government are rife with corruption due to this influence. Money apparently only hears money. The major networks report mayhem but do not even quietly question the ”imperative” for multiple undeclared “wars” , or unchecked defense spending. There is a broad and concerted “attack” on all foundations of civil services, public education and civic sense.  Though, Ding Dong Osama’s dead. Thanks a billions.  America seems hell bent on eating itself!

OUR DREAM OF LIGHT NEEDS TO OUT SHINE, DISPELL THE DARK DREAM OF THIS CURRENT MISCGUIDED PLAN OF ENDLESS, HEADLESS, HEARTLESS PROFIT.

I KNOW we can all ring bells by writing and calling, gathering talking, dancing, hugging, envisioning , organizing relentlessly, to business  management, and especially cc’ing their advertisers, constituents.    Like making that small and precious donation to the Peace Project this week !

On the very UP side .. Ghanaian-born Blitz the Ambassador is introducing a new CD this week .. Native Sun, following up Stereotype ( 2009) .. the entire cd is being released freely on You Tube .. check out his afrobeat and horn-laced conscious hip hop. WE had the proviledge to interview him in youth led studio this last week, and I later   attended his all ages and searing venue at La Pena Cultural Center in Berkeley … side by side with Mark Bamuthi’s spoken word  and traditional Ghanaian drum and dance. Blistering beats and exuberant entertainment. Everyone grooving between 4 and 84.   Akwaaba!

POP is by definition, flash in the pan … and still any concept of deep pop seems almost to have vanished .. gets swallowed up …

Why doesn’t the heaviest of the heavy resonate these days …

One of our students, now 16, keenly observes, sic : “ since deregulation, the aesthetic of media has capitulated to free market mentality, that is make money, with no social mission in sight. OUCH!

We seem inured to hearing and feeling collectively on a mass scale … no focus, soul- fire  .. a gazillion media channels, including this one … clamoring for ears and eyes .. ayayay ….

We recently revisIted a few compendia of MUSICAL material by WAR ( Very Best of Double)  and the Temptations ( Psychedelic Souls) . And we re-added Wailing Souls’ Psychedelic Soul …   OMJ.

Notice that as you turn the dial, we do not commonly hear …
