Not one .. but two major tech problems hobbled us this month .. our worldOneradio.org server crashed .. and while we are addressing that issue, our keCg Radio main server hard drive crashed .. all hands and tech on deck and all hands on manual !

Classroom instruction occupies me daily and constantly, and when those duties are wrapped each day .. there’s our pair of mighty mouse Bay Rim FM’s , production and maintenance of same. Exhaustion is a big factor, I crashed too. My beloved wife is always on point to monitor, heal, and/or stoke my energies.  As is the MUSIC! We’ll get by and we get by, with a little help from our friends.

A recent studio guest said,” I’ve never seen so much technology in a classroom”.   True enough, radio ops alone is a big little deal, two production rooms and all the related hardware / IT. The classroom has 10 workstations and two printers. And perhaps it’s not a surprise, the “internet generation”   can navigate their smart phones, and will immediately still call for help if they can’t figure out how to get a doc to print .. ” did you turn on the printer, and assure there is paper in it? , or, how to get a hand-made label ( for a cd compilation project) in its crystal case ? …”try some scissors and a glue stick !?

As an educaor I am all about coaxing students in developing “bigger ideas”, and kindling/coaxing positive citizenship, character, conscience, and accountability  while meeting the youth   ” where they are“.   I am coaxing along anew cohort of youth broadcasters, and some are developing step-wise and splendidly, absorbing and taking on a broader public community vision, while others are quite awash in high school adolescence, hangin back.   Many students seem overwhelmed/distracted  with personal “social” media,  they procrastinate on academic projects  (and take academic penalties for being late). Then there is the overarching pop culture, popularly promoted as “goin/bein stoopid” … glam and glom, and then the gloom and doom of current national and international economic angst/affairs, educational quality/access, and flat-out predictable pessimism/cynicism/skepticism. All this commutes to deep adolescent anxieties about a world-in-tilt.  That’s partly what i mean about “where they are”. We all need active optimism and hope.

We have been privileged to welcome a number of in-studio live guests this month in Youth-led interviews, and we are always grateful to Artists who make the time and have the skills and QI to engage young aspiring minds and hearts. This is an invaluable bridge to make meaningful community and musicultural connections.   Our thanks to Berkeley West Edge Opera, Ian Faquini (Brasilian Guitarist), and The Del Mars surf band, among others.

Our annual worldOne festival and related preparations are in full gear … early season artistic (including worldOne-a-go-go ( Los Van Van !?)  marionettes crated by Cordelia DeVere ), production, and  sponsor coordination.

March.. in like a lion … April showers ( finally) will bring new flowerings … on the musical tip ..these weeks have us enjoying …all kinds of new vibz from older and newer recorded projects: Afta 1, Herbie Hancock, 10′Ganja Plant, Pat Metheny, Terry Lynn, JRawls and John Robinson, Nouvelle Vogue, Janka Nabay, Afroliscious, Musical Art Quintet, Steven Stanley, John Trudell ( see the video “Trudell”), Mirage of Deep, Schulman, Coyote Jump, Bruce Cockburn, Jasmon, Deborah Iyall … musics from the four corners, and beyond. nationally, locally, we need to preserve and rebuild the kind of commitment to arts education that we enjoyed and believed in decades ago, which has slipped sadly into a middle / back burner in modern public education parlance and practice ..

yesterday our Youth Crew ( Jazzy, Ajah, Masha, Suzy)  engaged Mark Streshinsky in live studio .. Mark is Creative Director for Berkeley West Edge Opera .. which is gaining acclaim  for startling  innovations/spins in presentation of POPERA .. on the subject of the upcoming cyle of FLUTE .. and Manga-styled interpretation of Mozart’s Magic Flute ..Mark himself.. a 1985 alumni and graduate of El Cerrito High School … he warmly invited us all to the dress rehearsal this week .. several students and myself will attend .. and it was a brilliant session .. full of bright young feminine energy, Mark’s delightful persona bubbling (forgetting about his cold), wrapped in the soaring arias of the original score in German ( though BWEO will present and English version) ..encore!

Over several decades he has managed to work across the county, internationally, and bring the entire BWEO enchilada back to roost in our theater complex at   El Cerrito High School .. full circle .. a young a vibrant visionary .. we are art-blessed.

So .. I reflect that I would not have become the presenter/dj / producer I have become, were it not for rounds and years of natural and ready access to chorale, theater, band/orchestras, and public radio!  To wit, when we implement our recent  keCg fundraisers, it has been a partnership / split with our Music Education program .. which to me go hand in hand ..

I was eager to melt into winter solstice … heavy dreaming,  and attuning with deeper, veiled parts of self.  This is a reflective time of year for me. I withdraw, into collecting myself, remembering, and psychical blues and purples are common this time of year. I was caught in a small exoteric eddy of  blue as well. I can readily see why many suffer “holiday blues”, for different reasons.  A series of drawings was announced by that panel back in November ..which became, over a few subsequent weeks, a small gallery, of  insperiences, scapes and personal reflections. I am sharing them here because these too are musical .. and accompanied/inspired by others’ writing and photography, and of course musicality.

While I was thoroughly immersed these several recent weeks of academic year start-up/classrooms, post-graduate course work, and cobbling/writing a small and intense educational manual .. lots of music and dreams came through,  some ideas went round ..

to wit, and sadly winning the wars on delight, peace, joy, our environment, affordable housing, nutritious food, heath care, and on and on in dis here re ve la shon …

BTW .. when I started teaching, some 15 years ago .. 25 students was considered a reasonable class size …  I now have 40 students enrolled in my regular academic sections.  And my actual compensation has been cut by 15% in that same time. I wonder how things are looking for my counterparts at over at Halliburton?  KBR? I hear that F-16’s are too expensive to deploy lately .. Fleet Week excepted ..  Maybe additional savings can be realized if my classes were similarly taught by .. drones?

Ahh… the sounds of post-Iniki Kauai .. the d e v a s t a t i n g storm liberated all the roosters and chickens ( a la head-for-the-shelter-Ma!) … so the pre- and early dawn  bird-song is a lot like anywhere in Latin America (albeit sans fire-crackers, amen)

Earlier in the Spring we were alerted and attracted to the work of Tepairu Manea www.tikiripolynesianinstruments.com and his beloved wife/collaborator Jo, in their work in organizing their 10^th annual Heiva I Kauai Ia Orana Tahiti. We contacted the pair and offered our volunteer help around their celebration on Kauai. They welcomed us warmly. XO! to Pat. They are amazing. It was amazing.. two full days of magnificent soloists and thumping /swaying dance troupes (some @ 40 dancers strong) , trade-winds, rain squalls, sun, and rainbows.  Fabulous accompaniment by traditional Tahitian drummers and multi-instrument ensembles All enthralling, from powerful hakas to joyous percussive seated partner dances.    A few images follow:

After the opening kava (awa) ceremony, where to my surprise I was welcomed as an honored and served as a guest among dignitaries … Kumu Maile ( above) and the Mayor of Kauai,  Bernard P. Carvalho among others. Bula Vinaka Dallas ! As feeling returned to my mouth and throat, I happily jumped in as “opala man”.. the trash-collector, all-day,both-days, and I have perhaps never been more energized to perform a  manual task. Hard at work and non-stop, I got to see the whole show from every angle in the house  ( Kapa’a Beach Park ).

The evening following the heiva we gathered as a small group (of volunteers) at a beach pavilion in Wailua, the regular home to Jo’s hula halau , and thoroughly enjoyed a meal together, along with a live musical ensemble-surprise, organized by Auntie Stella … skilled voices, guitars and ukes, which got all the women dancing hula. Beautiful!

Kauai has a rather great community radio station, KKCR, with a primary transmitter and two repeaters, cable, and web stream to service the whole island. The station is literally in the jungle just off Kuhio Highway, around a few bends in Kauai clay-dirt roads, with KCCR hang-about roosters/chickens, naturally (below, center faddaclukka)  .  Respect! to GM/Engineer Dean Rogers( below, top) and Don Mussel, along with the entire volunteer staff. A large part of the daily offering is Hawaiiana/ Pacific music, and this is a good thing. If not tuned to KKCR we swooned over and over again to just a few CD’s on repeat, by Uncle Moe Keale (Live in Waikiki),  Dennis Pavao ( Na Mele Heno Heno ), and Waipuna (Mana’o Pili Waipuna). After a few days on the South side around Po’ipu, we settled into our Haena-Hanale-Na Pali North Shore house stay. I was thrilled to find some chunky surf on all sides of the island to engage me in hand-boarding and paddle-surfing. We were bathed in pure light and water, falls and rainbows …. Drowsed  through paka paka rain on the roof … sailed or swam among sea turtles, dolphins, and rays ..  walked and upwelled in the Na Pali … anointing our selves and souls in wild awapuhi. Something of real Polynesian-Hawaiian Spirit is alive and well in the faces and places of Kauai. We gratefully look forward to returning, and reimmersion.
