I was weeping as the Principal popped in  …  swept away in the power in the music.. I did not bother to wipe the tears .. Dave is kul like that ..

Amidst all the hoopla surrounding the Barry Bonds perjury case we can always free fall and lose ourselves in the lyrical melodic word and opposed to the written and contradicting palabras that are purposely meant to undermine and distort the truth.

I too recommend watching Claire Danes’ performance in the HBO film Temple Grandin. I gained so much insight from the film that at times during the film I dissed myself for not having the common sense to grasp the concept that everyone views the world differently.

My son is on the spectrum and it kills me that he and I may never be able to see things the same way, let alone sing in perfect harmony~

peace~

Love the bouncing and can’t wait to do some with you come July 4…

America where art we ?

America .. where art thou …

In the streets of Wisconsin .. defending basic workers rights, which, over decades, were logically supposed to accrue as corollary benefits for workers contribution of time and effort. Now yanked, by the same governments who gave away tax breaks, and thus state revenues, to corporations, political donors, and special corporate interests.

Michael Moore calls out the Corporate States of America  … and says of billionaires, media moguls ( as do other critical thinkers /actioneers) :

They control the message. By owning most of the media they have expertly convinced many Americans of few means to buy their version of the American Dream and to vote for their politicians. < See entire context of his letter/recitation:

http://www.michaelmoore.com/words/mike-friends-blog/america-is-not-broke

elsewhere … deregulation opened Pandora’s box for media “developers- buy + spinners” .. and in some cases straight-up extreme capital-ideologues …   this may account for why Drake-isms are ubiquitous on our high school campus and on urban commercial radio stations, in full expletive splatter of his glamorous boredom, while Roots-isms are not.

And Network Pleeease .. another program about Real Housewives of WTF– … emptyV… soul-deadening .. dumb and dumberer.. makes the population numb and numberer …

One is compelled to ask, where are the well produced TV programs about Real Soccer-Moms? Real Neighborhood Entrepreneurs, Farmers, Real Social Workers, Real Urban High School Teachers and Students, Real Hard-Working City Council Members ?

Maybe that’s the domain of local cable channels, if Comcast /Xfinity will leave any real room / promotion for them. And then, will the public value them more than the commercial jangle-juggernaut.

There is commercial media ( quarterly-sales-driven) and then there is soul-power-media … which one will you feed ?

Recently in communication with Farook @ MusicVoyager.com .. oh, you’ll have a good time in there “travelling” with host Jacob Edgar.  And you will likely enjoy getting more familiar with npr.org and www.npr.org/series/alt-latino/altlatino.

Working and visiting with Artist Photographer Fletcher Oakes locally is just totally, wow … electric-soul-power ..

Here’s a mandala image of Rocky Dawuni at worldOnefestival 2010 along with neighborhood actioneer and original Rosie-the-Riveter Mary Peace .. she’s also a great dancer !

And.. here’s another Fletcher Oake’s  image we will be employing on the main stage as a back drop in July 2011 ..

Having visited their studios last summer …A Mexican Radio Station has invited worldOne  to consult and guest host in their reggae programming .. que irie  !

worldOne served as dj for a memorial and community march last weekend, in Richmond, remembering a student who was felled in a wild-out vengeance drive by several weeks ago.  Family,  Students, Teachers, Principals, Police, Council- Members, Mayors, and community in attendance.   It was heavy-weight, and the musics bore the message .. Shabba Ranks, Stevie Wonder, Sly + the Fam, BEP + James Brown, Chaka Diemus + Pliers, Lucky Dube, Nas + Damian, John Robinson, Santana and Cubanismo ..

More from the worldOne Muse Room :

Along with mixing in soul stirring musics across decades, and our worldOne heartquarters voice mail .. we have been thrilling lately to : Gil Scott Heron / I’m New Here,  Flying Lotus 1983 and Pattern and Grid World, Ryuichi Sakamoto / Playing the Piano and Chasm,  The Black Keys / Brothers, Khaira Aarby/ Timbuktu Tarab, Sekouba /Sejo, Canyon Records Native Artists Randy Wood and Southern Scratch,  assorted sizzlers from African Dopeness, Bay Rim-dwelling Luther and the Flying Hammer and Steve G / Money Change People,  Hairdoo, revisiting Louis Hayes / Variety is the Spice of Life, and Mojarra Electrica / Calle 19.

Unfortunately we have evolved into a state of corporate fascism. And who, you may ask, educated all those corporate fascists to be smart enough to screw everybody out of everything?…Schoolteachers! Which proves the old quote that “no good deed goes unpunished”. Rock on workers of Wisconsin! Don’t quit fighting, you can win this!

Thank you for this blog and postings.
It is crazy that corporations and big business are in the position they are today.
What is the deal of a TV show about big business bosses going jr. and “making a difference” in the lower worker’s life? More propaganda to keep business in the “good”. Not working here.

Neighborhood Flava’s Good

Oh! Aunty Em …

There’s no place like home ..

(I worked in Hollywood, literally on the corner of Hollywood and Vine, for a few years, which seems like a curious dream.)

Friends and neighbors have lately pressed several cd’s and compilations into my hands lately, and I am grateful.

These gifts include:

John, of the Del Mars, who left his cd on the windshield of the worldOne L.U.V, at our community pool, where we like to swim.

Dr. Eve Ma who is working on a Flamenco music and dance compendium while she studies and resides alternately in Spain and Richmond.

Mark Hentlehoff, a fiend-in-common, who hit me in the third ear three sumptuous cd’s of his own compiling, while we were moving silk screens and holy-brick-a-brack for Artist Michael Roman:  Cachao + Cachaito, Indian Ragas + Bollywood , and Roy Ayers with Fela circa 1980.

Bob Duskis, of Six Degrees fame, sent along a deeply stirring single by Natasha Atlas, celebrating the spirit of the people of Egypt in their struggle to navigate their rebellion against the yoke of political oppression.

Our former neighbor Rick Leeds is on the East Coast working assiduously on economic policy, and his call-in made it into CSpan’s independent line..his Q+A e got worldOne remixed too, with some searing Ayers/Kuti

Our current Spring crop of high school aged radio broadcast students have wowed me too, as they begin to actively consider the act of broadcasting community radio vs personal listening / ipod. Flash!  Students readily and broadly agree that with all too rare exceptions, much of the glom we are subject to in pop is about nothing, and money/lust/greed greatly subverts musicality.( Sic: Halley Berry, the musical)  Still gets our attention though , huh? Ah, the advertising–entertainment complex. Ask JC Penny how that works! And has anyone noticed that fetching fotos of Kim K pop- up no matter what you search? LOL and ayayay.

Our young turk dj and collaborator, Ed Vincent is mixing up some of the zaniest and most interesting music mixes for his daily program Radio EdSoft Films. lots of twists and turns, hang on to your headphones.

We recently made a few project-focused mixes for a gem in our community, a Greek water aerobics instructor named Angela. She’s amazing. So, Debra Sue and I went into the studio to make eclectic mixes and voice zingers for her classes, which we have titled ”Angela’s Opadelic Aquatech !”. FUUUUN!

Our ECHS Media Academy is working on an update and upgrade of our extant .org site … yes, way overdue. The audio player options and functionality will be greatly enhanced … we’ll holla, but everything in a volunteer/educational  economy takes more time …  and that’s that’s likely more of a good thing, given the general results and vibz of fiscal-quarter-driven balance sheets.

Wherever you find yourself, please support and enjoy local media ( radio, tv, press) farms, stores, bookstores, coffee shops, restaurants, community centers, however you can. No matter how globally our awareness may reach, ultimately we will be  global yokels.  While the internet is kul, you live, we live where we live, and that’s our fo’ real superGvibraeconet, making eye and aura contact, with all its glorious and delicious nuances …

Our 13th annual worldOnefestival is on the way .. more details as the season rolls on, July 3-4 in Cerrito Vista Park. E como mai.

It’s a beautiful day in the neighborhood, a beautiful day for a neighbor …

and the flava’s good ..  Latifah

We Oneder …what do you particularly enjoy about your neighborhood ?

= : ) ~

ViPS.. from the worldOne Muse Room…

In recent weeks we have been thrilled to receive and broadcast:

Lulacruza/Circular Tejido, Charika KrisnamurtyTandon/Soul Call, Jimmy McHugh’s /Valentine, Afrocubism,Del Mars/Surf Monkey, Transnational Dub Step, Boca Do Rio/Epnoymous EP, Bentsi Gefni /Early Dream, Yuval Ron Ensemble/Live at Sacred Music, Hawk and Hacksaw/Cervantine.

We enjoy videos at home and often enough a few excerpts wind up in worldOneradiomixology, sometimes in chunky sweeps, like Ten Questions for the Dalai Lama, or Food Inc. Lately we have been chllin in our big comfy chair catching some remarkable video entertainments including This Is It , the video doc of MJ’s last stage production, and The Kids are Alright.

The 100 ft. palm trees that encircle the neighborhood and silhouette against the bright blue sky, the aura of peace, and the friendly neighbors. Life is good in Victoria Park.

My neighborhood…hmmm…am really ready to get out of No. Hollywood, but I do have to admit the FOOD and restaurants around me are amazing :)

Wow…that’s a lot going on! Next time include some links to listen for the tunes if there are some!

This list puts ‘Morning Becomes Eclectic’ to SHAME! Wow, I wanna listen in, brother.

Good Morning! Mr. Berggruen, California Dreaming ..Calling ..

And Good Morning to you dear earthnic reader/comspirer  …

This morning I write through the blogoshere into the internet, and the indranet?

Noting that it is likely highly unlikely that I could deliver the missive below through conventional office protocols via Karstadt, the German retailing group, or Prisa, the Spanish media conglomerate that publishes El País and owns Le Monde…

In some confidence that a businessman of Mr. Berggruen’s stature, and our good luck, (see last paragraph, lol )  will comspire to place this otherwise “random” press reflection back through a press/media associate, into his hands, and thus his mind .. and thus, conscious internetception?

On the morning and day dedicated to the living memory of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. whose living example helped shape the conditions and the imperative for thence child Cawky, to continue to learn, conceive of, and implement worldOneradio today. Axé.

Add your good juju !  …. and otherwise do that gud vudu that udu …

and have a beautiful day in your neighborhood …

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Esteemed Mr. Berggruen, Good Morning, Good!
We read about you for the first time this am, and it is received with a bolt of intelligence and hands-on hope,  which we will reinterpret as Heathy Omnidirectional Policy Evolution, for California, and in turn, as an evolving contributing  model for the revitalization of  U.S. ecologeconomy and All-Americans Spirit.
The attached article ( link below) was in my worldOneradio.org in box, sent by an internet journalist friend, a stimulating read, on this Martin Luther KIng Day 2011. On the premise that Mr. Tett’s treatment is mostly fair and / or accurate, I respectfully call for your kind attention, Sir.
The day is relevant as CA school teacher’s / schools have the day off-on. I Live and Work in California these most recent 20 years or so , partly as a full time public school teacher(Spanish), and renter, so with millions of others I am “on the horns”  of the writhing economy.  We are compelled to work for less, personally pay for school supplies, and work on unpaid days off.  Good thing I ran with bulls (Cuidad Rodrigo, España, ‘77).  I am writing from personal history as a New York native, third child of one immigrant and one farmer-parent, after traveling the world a bit (through studies and crewing Pan American), and a student of both public and private schooling. I immersed in Radio broadcasting (Honolulu, LA, SF), due to a life-long-love of music, and art in dialogue, and likely the fact that I can accomplish other tasks, while listening.
Yesterday, while we were listening to some latin-soul-music-for-inspiration (Mucho Axé) , my beloved wife Debra Sue and I were driving back from several hours of snowshoeing in the Sierras when for the second time that day, we weaved along the 580, through fog-bound Cerros crowned with immobile wind-turbines, wrapped in gray other-worldly fog or illumined by bursts of blue sky and tangerine sunshine. My precious wife expressed how much those turbines represented to her symbolically, decades ago, adding inspiration for her to move here (from NYC), as she felt that in California, an envisioneer future was particularly possible, and arriving. She has since become a practitioner of Integrative and Chinese Herbal Medicines, specializing in Oncology/Immune System. For my part, I imagined reinventing how to reapply the miracle of radio broadcast as an entertaining palette for kultimutural arts and as a dialogue tool, and invested the last 16 years producing, hosting and teaching same, along with the creation of worldOnefestival. We are daily working Californians, subject to all the same rules, facilitations and setbacks, as millions.
And we want to be part of the constellation of solutions that will set this gorgeous land and its hopeful  peoples on a much higher ground in a connected web of social, cultural, educational, economic, and ecological policies .
I urgently see a role for regular inspiration and reinforcement of key intellectual and emotional “habits”  to wrest California and the nation from its travails. It’s more than time for a “frequency shift”, in virtually all phases of daily work and conception, of what we really need-to-be-up-to in our collective and connected lives through education, workplace and recreation, while we live as regular folks, in progressively more extraordinary mediocrity!  Thus, worldOneradio, now in its 16th year of daily volunteer San Francisco Bay Rim broadcast.
To wit, we oneder how we may constellate with your resonant interests and initiatives.
I culled these quotes from the article by Mr. Tett, these being representative of what caught my attention and compelled me to write for yours.
“California is in trouble – but I think California is ready.”
“But here [in the US] there is a very different attitude. The system is broken, people realise it’s very broken. In California they’re all unhappy.”
So what model does he want instead? Singapore? “I think it’s probably the best-run country in the world. It probably is on the authoritarian side and it needs to loosen up a little bit,” he observes. “But the ideal system is not necessarily the most exciting system. Probably, on average, boring is good for the average person.”
That medicine is presumably not intended for him, I observe; after all, he would not park in “boring” Singapore for long. “I am a hypocrite,” he admits. “But I am not thinking of me but what is good for most.”
He plans to continue with his investments but wants to put more effort into politics and philosophy; one model, he concedes, is George Soros, the financier and philanthropist. Since Berggruen does not have any children, he also plans to give his money away to his political think-tank and other reform causes. He is considering creating a media empire to provide an alternative to Rupert Murdoch’s, and promote civil society.
If Berggruen displays as much stubborn determination in pushing his ideas as he did with this bill, then maybe – just maybe – they might actually fly. In any case, I would like to dream so: right now, the western world certainly needs political magic.
A few random notes in closing this particular invitation to reach back. Singapore is fascinating. A baby orangutan pooped on my lap there once (at the zoo). Not at all unrecommendable, although I was likely just lucky.
The progressive, left-leaning press is savaging Jerry Brown, “making him” sound shrill. Very unpleasant, and more duality / contra-position/ hype  in media-wash, alas.
Some years ago, during a longish and kind of leisurely stroll on an SF pier ( out a side- door at an event) I pressed a worldOne cassette tape in Jerry Brown’s hand, from which I surmise he selected his theme music for his his nascent, erstwhile radio show (Us 3).
I genuinely hope you are already smiling and reaching for your smart-phone, laptop, and staff, to learn more about what we have in mind and heart as people and producers of positive and uplifting work in our community, an overt comspiracy toward …
Heathy Omnidirectional Policy Evolution.  Best always.
Happy New Orbit
Happy New Orbit …
We are embarked on a next spin around the sun, and we are NOT occupying the same “space” as one day ago, much less one year ago, as we are travelling at about 220 kilometers per second,  in this “new lap” around our  Sun, within our Milky Way Galaxy, which is traveling at @  1.34 million miles per hour, in the direction of the constellation Hydra.”
Whoa …   how do you keep your hair looking so styley ?
And we are heading for and into the vibration of the 5th (Mayan) Sun
While we are broadcasting all the good, the bad, and the ugly ( and or insipid) into our ears (plugged)  and flat-screens ( with attached “living” rooms), this universe is apparently about to bathe us in a new harmonic, a resonating frequency to evolve humanity to a new resting level of conscious perception. Ho’o make make!
Speaking of Makamake, it is a name given to a “dwarf” planet in the Kuiper’s belt off Neptune, along with Haumea, and others.
I awoke this morning with a powerful and delightful ki ho alu tune ( male duet, with chiming strings)   in my head this am. Perhaps my personal radio had attuned to those singing spheres?  A delightful way to awaken.  And yes, Makana confirms he received his 2001 worldOnefestival cassette.
We had a drenchingly enjoyable holli-day respite.. home and hearth, holli- grog, foods, friends and mistletoe, and arts/music ..  Juan and I repaired our home heater .. with a new (fan) belt from Kragen .. whose manager surprise-gifted us some funki-fun hats ( mine says DUB ).  How thoughtful and generous of him !
Debra Sue and I tromped and slid through several c-c-c-cold and gorgeous days around Truckee-Tahoe. When we were up there last week, it was @ ZERO degrees .. oh, and sunny. Some snow shoeing, XC, and down hill side-country boarding. WOW. Alpine beauty juxtaposed with the stop-waaait-go-chains-on-off
I – 8o, often a wintry mess, and otherwise our car’s wipers-doors-locks, froze.
We have been thoroughly enjoying AVATAR .. a gift from my son Taylor Keola, the deleted material is some of the BEST ! and was cut apparently, as  too sexy, political, shamanic … maybe would have changed the rating game .. or the pop! appeal game … anyway, at least its available to view ( in special edition) , …
The vision quest scene was bold and beyond …  I was equally stunned to hear some of the deepest, heaviest music in the “worm / vision” scene .. native music  Stearns and Sunsinger’s Singing Stones regularly broadcast via worldOneradio over many  years .. kul …
We got our to Biscuits and Blues on NYE, to take in a funk-jazz-fusion set with musician / journalist   Malcolm Marshall on stage with George Lacson Project .. ( pic of Malcolm and Corey inserted) watched SF fireworks from our home in El Cerrito…and we saddled up for a Peruvian friend’s birthday and salsa dance party .. Pacho fronts a brilliant full 10 pc band, Evolucion, ..  a great fiesta in Concord @ Club Sazon. VJ Bruno dropped this sizzler on the big screen … check out this video by Grupo Mania, a visual and dance floor fire starter:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-NyVruNMm8M&feature=fvw
I danced with Debra Sue till I sweat though my clothes. While she’s gotten pretty good turning S’s on that snowboard, and its even more important that we work our turns turn on the dance floor!
worldOnemixology recently includes a stunning new release from Danya River,
an artist in high arc of realization.. WOW! www.danyariver.com
Dianne Patterson, exhilarating in live performance, has just released a new indie CD project, redolent with local-global aspiration and Northern Cali Sierra Love.  www.dianepatterson.org
We have been savoring several arrivals through Porto Franco records .. including soaring vocal dreams by Kacey Johansing,  growling Seth Augustus, Mark Growden, and frenzied Brass Menazeri. All brilliant, in respective genre. www.portofrancorecords.com
A special mention here for label Intrepid Patrol, and Maria Volanté’s cd, Yo Soy Maria .. which thrilled us, bathed us in masterful, sensuous, Argentine-rooted fusions throughout and gave us another favorite-forever song  … in the form of Ultimos Acordes de la Fiesta. We keep coming back for another ride. We hope you will find it and enjoy it.
What joys and discoveries did you enjoy over the hollijolinuyear ? What intentions have to planned to advance and realize?
Wishing you a new orbit bursting with subtle and great all star vibz …             = : ) ~
Wishing bright blessed days ..
and dark sacred nights, throughout the rolling year …
We have been enthralled of late.. swooning and scintillatingly reconnected with the transcendental early 70’s synth-spiritualizer sounds of TONTO and Mssr. Malcolm Cecil, thanks to a three-bank-shot through a dear friend Loren and Stuart Maconie / BBC 4 ..  please enjoy a revelatory introduction? or revisit, and a listen  www.tontostudio.com and you may learn a lot you may not already know about Stevie Wonder’s wonder years, and the otherwise popularly hidden (co)creation of 4 epic albums, starting with Music of My Mind, through Songs in the Key of Life.
Thank you TONTO,  and endless appreciation!
Malcolm Cecil and Bob Margouleff.
New year sneak peek ahead .. looking forward to worldOnefestival 2011 .. pouring through Sister Carol’s catalyzing catalogue … no matter how hard they try they can’t sop reggae .. Isis survive any crisis … ital is vital is total …see: www.blackcinderellla.com ,.. more 2011 worldOnefestival details, as the season progress  .. you are invited !
Been thrilling to Makana these last several weeks… from his ki ho’alu roots through progressive fusions. Makana kindly preformed in worldOnefestival 2001, and we’ve  just sent him an (archived) original cassette of that performance. Yup. a cassette! LOL .  Tape/Cassette recording was the order of the day in 2001!   Querying if he had a player, he wrote me that he also keeps a Victrola!
Visiting with Elvon and Roxanne and their mustangs (quadruped kine) recently at home in both snow-covered  Shasta, and again the next week in our El Cerrito  heart-quarters ( sans ‘stangs) … Elvon (one ecclectic jazzrockfusion-loving Haida) put me onto Terje Rypdal ( Crime Scene ) and pointed me back-to-the-future Jeff Beck ( Emotion and Commotion). We chained up and rumbled around Tahoe basin and back this past weekend, swaying and swinging with encantadores Orquesta La Moderna Tradicion ( En Canto), danzonazos !
Finally picked up  afrobeat-living-legend-soul-star Tony Allen’s Lagos No Shaking, and relished another gem in his discography.  His relentlessly latticed, low-in-the-cut permutations and sparked by his potent social lyricisms.  Dug out a paper-sleeved recent arrival, kinda shuffled into an in-bound stack (o’ wax? er, polymer) and thank goodness I didn’t loose its slim-packaged-self amidst the constant musical ebbs and tides here  .. and I can urge South Asian /Middle Eastern attuned hEARtS to Shoshan Shye Ben-Tzur (EarthSynch). Jazz alert:  Colin Dean, bassist, has pressed a release titled Shiwasu … I hope you will love it, too.
Our beloved step mom Arlene chatted up her NYC taxi driver (driver-artist, natch) , and voila .. we are broadcasting selections by Afro-Haitian artist Luka Adjaffi.  And of course, as serendip would have it, we have been listening in to Robert Earl Keen, West Coast, VP Dance Hall scorchers ( bawdy) , and N.W.A. (more inflammatory scorch ). We have been listening the Wizard of Oz original soundtrack, which is somewhere up and overwhelming in its breadth, sensitivity, darkness, humor, joy and redemption.  Shakira’s new one does have a few hooky-pop-cumbia passages, and feels alas, formulaic, I suppose that may not be a big surprise or let-down.
And perhaps upsetter-ringer of the last few weeks has to be, with props to my high school chargé, Ultra Lounge’s (‘99) Wild Cool and Swinging Mrs. Miller. Yes, that Mrs. Miller, from the Johnny Carson-era Tonight Show, in this setting, thoroughly reinterpreting/ruining, in the best way possible, others’ smash hits from the Beatles to Nancy Sinatra.  Mrs Miller gives “Downtown” a whole nuther (fun house mirror) dimension.
So… you can see this is all one big musical blender-bender, whot?  And why not?
With all reverence aside .. and the exuberance and overindulgence of solstice-fueled and holli-grog-soaked festivities on all sides … designate a driver .. and have endless fun scanning nalgitas  ( or mistlefoot!?) at your holiday office parties …
have a happy holli jolli !  and getchusommadat kujuchagulia,  and yes …
Holy Nights ..  all star, all right …    = : ) ~
Corey,
Tonto’s Expanding Head Band is unreal!!
I’ve always “Wondered” how Stevie was able to bring that sound to the masses. I absolutely love the story behind how the producers worked him into a lather to get the vocals for “Living for the City” just right.
Bootsy Collins influence in funk-a-delic is storied and treasured. His reaction to what T.O.N.T.O. did for Stevie Wonder’s music is funk-a-delicious!!!
I may have to call upon Malcolm Cecil and The Original New Timbral Orchestra to produce “3″. That is…once Time Machine has been mastered and released.
great blog!!
Shasta – approach from Weed, CA
After recently flying a kite-wing with my son Taylor Keola and getting tugged off our feet,  and swimming chunky Makapu’u…  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f1fvwhB2l…
Winter reflections and refractions ..
… time for rest, dreams, and involutions … following a giving-thanks and rebirthday, anniversary retreat to quietude, sauna, springs, and ice-encrusted stream dipping … snow shoeing the flanks of Shasta last weekend … scintillating and waist deep …
at the SF PEACE PROJECT event, I was drawn to a particular art-peace, Child’s Rapture…  and it is now illuminating the entry to our working classroom/studio… it elicits many delighted comments from Students .. which in turn delights me … so much radiance in a relatively diminutive image … you can see it displayed in the Peace Project page on The Whole 9 …
Praying-for-deliverance, from the daily drubbing of our babylonian school system  … it was of course, Native American Heritage Month in November .. lamentably.  my students’ awareness of Native America, is often defined by how many times they’ve seen Disney’s Pocahontas. ( That said, thanks Diz, for TRON 1, and I do hold some cautious hope for TRON 2 ).
As far as I know, Native America (ns) are still virtually overlooked,  in our current CA HS  “standardized curriculum”… under the heels of manifest destiny, gold-rush “Golden State”  mind-f- – -ery  … to wit, our little and mighty radio station broadcasts an hour of indigenous and native inspired musicality daily, thanks to the generosity, talent and vision of Doug Wendt (Native Son Rising / www.midnightdread.com) and Gregg McViccar (Undercurrents / www.undercurrentsradio.net) … while I did place announcements on the school-wide PA daily, pithy props/brief bios of  “prominent Natives” .. these were invariably  read, from the main office, in typical HS musical/cum-smart-aleck-style.
While recently revisitng the soaring soprano of Roy Orbison, transcendentalisms of Earth Wind and Fire, and the joyous shake- down of KC and the Sunshine Band …  we have been warmed, of late, by musicalities flowing in from Luca Ciarla and Adria,  Mikel Rouse, Ceelo Green,  Makana, Mark Matos, Dave Mihaley’s Shimmering Leaves, The Pick Pocket Ensemble, Kaya Project, Mitch Marcus,  Kartick and Gotam, Taj Weeks, The Cuban Cowboys, Orquesta D’Soul, Elliot Smith, and Mos Def (Ecstatic). As the starry night maximizes its annual seasonal reach in your vicinity, and into your heart … and the day/light begins to grow, what may be stirring in your soul ?    = : ) ~
ViPS .. if you like flash mob events, this holiday inspired Hallelujah might have you tingling …
yep, i saw this before, and i think everyone is forwarding it to eachother. with good reason, too!
This is a stunning example of what can happen when a spark of inspiration is ignited. Just by singing a song in an unexpected place, these people have touched over 8 million people. When I watched it this morning, I actually started crying, thinking about how possible it is to make a change when people think creatively.
I’m wowed by the hallelujah chorus. AMAZING GRACE. Really taps into our tribal need for universal harmony.
The power of music in full harmonic stride~
Believe~
Merry Christmas Mr. Potter!!!
Me Beg Dat Peace
Looking forward to the Peace Project vibzin up San Francisco ( and beyond) this month.
While O’Reilly et al refer to SF in terms like “the San Francisco Syndrome”, and their opponents, real and imagined, as “living in a bubble world”, and not the real world. I do observe his talking (squawking) points, same as I do the new CD by Taj Weeks, A Water-Logged Soul Kitchen.
The Pundit and the Rasta make the same points about what’s going terribly wrong.
Nonetheless,  we seem deadlocked / powerless to achieve genuine, inspired insight,  beyond the subconscious and thus recurring causes, to  affect consensus and take the circular-reconciled view, and embark on long road of consciousness/ policy change. Long road, as what gets set in motion tends to stay in motion, notably ideas, enforced by the emotional energy of belief.
Waterlogged indeed, Katrina inundated, FEMA-ignored NoLeans and Gulf Coast, subsequently bathed in oil. Winton Marsalis stated in Spike Lee’s “Levees Broke”, that Katrina held up a mirror for a searingly looong time, allowing us a long stare at our National excesses and glaring blind spots, and yet the beat and expenditures of WAR go on. One of the documentaries local inteviewees  rolled his eyes softly inward and described a friend’s comments that Katrina started balling up off the West African Coast, and perhaps represents the unsettled spirits of the Dark Passage coming to wake up America to its inequities and iniquities.
While what John Stewart (at his well attended Mall rally) et al, call the “Conflictinator”, howls about the imperatives to aggress against terrorism, and economic collapse, blaming everyone except themselves. We’ve been slimed, who ya gonna call?  Popular media echoes the same conflicts as news and entertainment, while pop musics and radio stations generally keep out of the fray, preferring to preserve profits and keep advertisers /viewers “happy” (mesmerized / deluded)  … the ” happiness machine” described in Adam Curtis/ Century of Self .  The advertising-entertainment complex.  Even our educational institutions largely perpetuate the same stories, stuck in a rut, like a broken record … an education-stagNation complex?
This last week, two very-produced parodies of Obama hit You Tube; “The Very Model of  Model of a Modern US President”  ( @ 1 million views to date) and the other “ Baraka Flaka Flame” ( @ 1.6 million views)  … which wolf shall we feed?
Disasters will persist personally, collectively until the subconscious material is exposed  acknowledged, and transmuted. Noticing many images of angels/organics/crossroads, cosmos… hinting that the Quingdom of heaven (the patterns of peace, rumors and conditions of peace) and Creation are within and without (you) if we will let it be … SHARING IS CARING …
MAY PEACE… JOY… LOVE… ABUNDANCE … HAPPINESS  …  SHINE !
HO’OMAKE MAKE …  = : ) ~
Sweleanor Rigby?
Roosevelt … with all due respect to Rigby, or the swell one …
One of my students asked me “who are your favorite musicians”..
Things that make you go hmmm …
I stalled and said I’d get back to him, and I will, likely with this:
Great minds discuss ideas.
Average minds discuss events.
Small minds discuss people.
Can this concept be applied to music ???
The concepts of Music, musicality, merit, purpose, enjoyment, broadcast,  are endlessly and relatively defined, promoted, or defended. It depends on anyone’s individual or group-affinity compass. I have heard passionate listeners of all predilections describe their music (genre) in religious terms.
Adapted from Gandhi’s Seven Deadly Sins, and a great stretch from current conversations,  I will ask my young chargé, and you esteemed reader, how you may feel about the about the following,  … albeit conceptually a bit out there, and under-construction.  Is it fair, can we apply/adapt Gandhian principles to our boom boxes, stations, or dance floors?
What function or fun is that?
Great Musics in their dimension and expression might approach, sonically, lyrically, and rhythmically address, critique, express, celebrate, describe :
Seven Restorative Revivifying (Musical) Themes Virtues/Adjustments.
Share Wealth as Fruit of Good Works
(receive / give back / harvest + sew seeds)
Correlate Conscience in Pleasure
(reciprocate spherical generosity )
Crystallize Character in Application of Knowledge
(universal value-centricity)
Weave Morality Into Fair Commerce
(one for/in all for/in one, reward producers / envisioneers )
Apply Science for Upliftment of All Life and Humanity
(ecology = economy)
Sacrifice for Greater Good Through Reverence and Worship
(religions as unifying harmonic value tones)
Practice Politics As Lawful Expression of Universal Creation Principles
(administration of creation = veritical politic)
I’ll get back to you with any fruits of this discussion in class, and back to the class with any blog comments …
Any musical reflections that make you go hmmmm?
Any and all respected artists, will agree that longevity plays a big part when it comes to building a relationship with your fan base.
To grow and/or flourish as a musician requires time and patience from the record labels; something not every signed artist will have the luxury of recieving. The record industry is no longer run by artisans or music loving visionaries as they were back in the day but by corporate entities that want nothing more than to generate earnings and produce positive cash flow for it’s shareholders.
Furthermore, how can and artist grow when they are always touring?
Musicians continually need to tour in order to keep themselves in the public eye and move merchandise. Music fans are very difficult to satisfy as their choices are many and technological advances being what they are, they have a multitude of entertainment choices at their fingertips.
On the flip side, musicians enjoy the ease at which they are able to reach thousands if not millions of music lovers across the globe thanks to Apple Itunes, Napster, Last FM, Lala, Spotify, CD Baby and social networks such as myspace, facebook and twitter.
If my band mates and I had access to this type of technology we may have been able to increase the odds in getting signed to a major label but it means nothing if you don’t deliver the goods.
Rock on~
Elevator Innovator
Growing and older .. ever-the-more sensitive perhaps .. I now readily understand why geezers sought some peace through “ Easy Listening” / Elevator Musics, Muzac, though hardly elevating …
These recent weeks, with the onslaught of autumnal scholastic rhythms and concomitant stressors, I am awakening each morning, to review my dreams, affirm life, and engage in quietude/contemplation study … as the twilight parts and sun rises … I seek some peace.
This predawn hour is lately accompanied by two favorite recorded works :
Alex Theory’s “Light” and a recent arrival, Ishq, “ Sama”. I am reminded that when I first started broadcasting worldOneradio, the six pm hour was devoted to sonic vespers, over a decade … an hour of progressively deeper dive, and then awakening …. ethereal and earthy/visceral .. searching / soothing / healing … my broadcast colleagues had trouble with how chill the hour was … I see that the vibes are calling me back .. and they are winding their way back into my heart/mind and playlists … including my classroom … afternoon classes enjoy 5-7 minutes of quietude … personally, I stay busy .. but the youth are eager for it and enjoy the reboot .. I would too if I had been up half the night on Facebook or videogames … carrramba … we all need more peace in our area-fari…
worldOne recently hosted the California Coastal Cleanup event in SF. BIG FUN !
A picture perfect WARM sparkly day at Ocean Beach .. following the clean-up the beach was full of joyful play, sun bathing and surfing. WOW .. the musics/sound-system  sounded particularly resonant (due to suprizingly calm air). NICE !
Musaically, we fell over Blacktronic series lately, and are charmed by the Cool D Vision dance-centric mixes and sequencing of Italian DJ/ compiler Bruno Bolla. We have added to our worldOneradio mixology this week, among others (selections from) : Buju Banton’s strong new release “ Before the Dawn”  .. The Roots / John Legend “” Wake Up” …  Santana’s “Guitar Heaven”   .. Tracy Bonham’s “Masts Over Manhattan”, Avishai Cohen’s , “Aurora” , Meklit Hadero’s “On a Day Like This”, and Janet Planet’s “Dylan Songbook” . We also had to revisit Playing for Change’s You Tube “Stand By Me” … and Stevie Wonder’s Ngiculela …
We are singing, and broadcasting, of love from the heart  ….  U B U   = : ) ~
ViPS .. archived audio, representative worldOne programs, are listenable through the worldone website homepage @ www.worldoneradio.org    .. green button, top right “Listen” …. and otherwise the program is streamed weeknights 6-9pm CST via www.jazzbeatradio.tv .. e como mai  …
