Blesstival ..

Looking wild-eyed forward to this weekend’s First Annual Peace Jam LA ..

Every “big” thing, even mighty rivers, start as a “small” thing, a spring somewhere… a small group, a collaboration of like-minded folks ..   and a project conceived will flow like water, naturally gathering force along the way  ..   and like this and like that an-uh, we’ll JAM together, constellate  this weekend with Blas, Rosendo, Steve and Sekou, Pilgrim, and the Downtown Jazz Project. Let’s get together and feel alright .. shimmi shimmi koko PEACE .. See you there!

Up the coast, and amid Cali’s curvaceous slopes, worldOne festival 2011 is complete .. a grand annual round of contemplation, drawing, seeding, planning, gestation, construction, scraped knuckles, collaboration, exertion, gyration, celebration, recession, exhaustion, and the gazillion errands, in reverse !

It takes a village to raise a proper community festival .. and here’s a foto of the assembled  community of worldOneateers ..  what I mean to say by “proper” is the SPIRIT, around what purpose/intention in which a festival takes place, and the community investment in its eso- and exoteric outcome .. towards relatedness, vision, renewal. Commercial festivals can lean that way, and often, miss that mark.

Now packing-down, repairing, critiquing, note-taking,… ultimately .. giving thanks that we were able to do it gain … post-festival rest-disorder ( the adrenaline-pumped- 24-7 list really, really takes time to wind down.. like my popping up at 2 am, just having to get notes on paper..( like making sure to source “t-post safety caps” and Balinese ceremonial umbrellas )

And yes, I have already tendered invites for 2012. LOL …

On the decks this am … really … Breakout ( Swing Out Sister)  and Desree (Ya Gotta Be) … played them back to back a few times while I was building-packing-sorting in the yard … genuinely upbeat ditties … absolutely glad to her them again …

In recent worldOnemixology: Terra Firma, Afro Celt Sound System, Loop Guru, Temptations, Terryy Linen, I-Tawah, Shayna Dread, Stephen Marley, Selections from the Soundtracks to I Love You Philip Morris and The King’s Speech, Iron and Wine, Bon Iver, Pilgrim, Hudson Mohawke, Crystal Monee Hall,  Free Design, Taurus Riley, Ellis Paul and Vance Gilbert, Celso Fonseca,  Herb Alpert Remixed, Sergio Mendes, Sister Carol, and Jimmy Durante .. in a worldOne you- made-me-Inka Dinka Reminx …. Now dat’s a trumpet .. ha cha cha cha !

More fest resonance and fotos soon …happy summerings !

Spring Hopes Eternal

Spring Hopes Eternal … La Vida Es Carnaval

This Spring season has been particularly beautiful and inspiring in various ways, eso and exoterically  … great tides are surging .. and I am surfing / riding in the mix … seeking and soaking up all nuances … all much needed help and whisperings , as I otherwise navigate the great toothsome cogs and gears of BIG HUMM and DRUMM or, STURM AND DRANG  ..

Its been a few weeks since writing … wrapping up the spring-fevered-mytwitface-fatigue-distracted school term, and the festival is ramping up- up-UP .. my need to retreat and rewind is compelling, and I am finding great satisfaction and joy in escaping to snowshoe ( again, UPUPUPer still)  for a few hours and boarding back down .. I have found a “secret” personal, snow-bound haven in the sierras pretty nearby …  the only company there is birdsong, tumbling creeks, my thrubbing heartbeat-in-my-ears, and bear tracks.

Almost needless to say, these precious hours of alpine calm, are wrapped in hours of throbbing music driving hither and yon .. which I also cherish, as I can immerse, and get to and through all the material I have had “ on deck” ..  the short list in recent weekly sojourns, and on home decks has included :

Phillip Glass, Meredith Monk, PC Munoz, Ray Le Montagne, Alison Krauss and Union Station, Dr. Bronner, Kevin Yazzie, Whitney Meyer, GOGOL BORDELLO, LL Cool J, Karen O and The Kids, Foreign Legion, John Prine, Joan Jeanreneaud,  Lupe Fiasco,  J. Cole,     Caribou. Oh, and Perry Como.

All added with élan, in our little worldOne kinda mixology .. you’ll notice I refrain from critiques, nuff said if we added it. Some stuff is so bawdy, it cannot make the FM cut, and are otherwise mind-or dance floor club sizzlers.  Givin the devil his/her due and otherwise, AMEN.

We can highly and heartily recommend that doc on Doctor Bronner..  Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soap Box .. in the worldOneremix with LOV.. a memory .. sugaring with John in Vermont circa ’77.  A week of sweaty, boot-sucking sugar sap-gathering, and chopping wood .. heaven with blisters. The week is up and the women arrive at the shack. Beautiful women, John’s girlfriend, her younger sis and her friend.  We eat well, low on the food chain and strictly local/organic .. the fire in the dry sauna is stoked, and we sweat and laugh together in the frozen  thawing Vermont moon–steeped starlight, lunging out through the snow to immerse in a creek, sitting on logs, steaming in the moonlight till the need to warm up drove us inside once more .. in rounds .. wow ..

I still can smell the peppermint DR. B’s we bathed with that night, the first real bath in a week.   Its been a fixture in my life since, for good reason. I did get to speak with him @ 25 years ago. He was very present, cordial, engaging and yes, he had just finished his accustomed run along-side a moving car.

If you do not mind, another recommendation  .. Phillip Glass / A portrait in Twelve Parts .. intimate, and rather astounding in its simplicity/complexity … Oh my …

We shared our recent days with friends/collaborators .. yesterday at SF Carnaval  in the morning and the afternoon at a Marin Greek Festival  .. the weather was startlingly bright and fresh all day … as were countless beautiful sounds, movements, textures, tastes and colors … rootsy, traditional, sublime, familial, neighborly and yes, sexy ….a lot like spring flowers in a new fangled fantasia .. we made a long play radio especial this am … of our Carnaval whirligig … FUUUN !

Oneders and Signs ..

Simmering our 13th annual festival here in El Cerrito, and you are invited !

backdrops and back-stage coordinations, flyers and City meetings about every little thing under the sun …  wash stations, artist transport, and generators ..  food vendor permits .. it takes a village to raise a festival … positive work all around … in the meanwhile ..  sorry we’ve been off line .. it happens this time of year .. the daily school and  festival scramble is on.  So , this one is a multipart thread, jotted down over a few weeks now . please indulge its length and amble .. I’m just a soul whose intentions are good ..

Musics with a message .. waiting for, fomenting some breakthrough …

BTW .. wonders and signs ..  watch for Haley’ Meteors  shower Friday May 6 @ 3:30 am .. in Aquarius …  get to a dark place for better viewing …

( and  better in southern hemisphere)

While its energizing to lock horns with the inimical, its also tiring and even dangerous.

Just about once a year, lately.I write and follow up personally, on what I trust are incisive and revealing  appeals letters to broadcasters about seemingly obvious themes in media literacy …  goodness knows we seem to finally be coming to some new terms

With sugary-salty foods manufacturers..

Most recently, I reached out to the owner operators of  a “dance / POP”  station about the value of messaging inside a recent Ke$ha tune .. personally I’d rather just get to and stay in the good stuff… light with a taste of dark, thank you  (what we teach and broadcast everyday).

The easy duck is for commercial operators is “Geez, we hope you will not change the station, but you have choices”  .. and/or  “ we listen to lyrics and follow FCC rules”.  Utter Bullsh–t.  Let’s unf–k, that sscchall we ?

That’s the same side–step used by food industry giants over decades , and you can see what a national health crisis (obesity/diabetes) and informed-citizen-actioneer mobilization are now accomplishing. While the giant corps get busy white-washing their role or complicity, and finally are draaaagged to some new level of conscience and compliance.  They’ll still make money. How about some personal and enviro-health as a premise and by-product. Stunning revelation, to be sure.

I know , I know , crass, ( salty, sticky-sweet) racy or vulgar material has its place. Remember that lovely taste of dark juice, previously mentioned. But really, where is any craft or what we would agree is some health-seeking  soulfullness.  Especially in a POP all ages setting.I understand it’s hard to make great porn.

With the slope slippin the way it has, digressively,  over decades, extreme materialism screeching away ( and to countless  inevitable crashes all around) ..  scandalizing the image of younger and younger girls.

Why is the blatantly soft-porn and obscene openly promoted, while karate moms or soccer dads shrug? Overwhelm, I suspect.

Ke$ha is now on ,officially, her “Sleaze Tour” …

hot and dangerous, running this town just like a club, we are superstars … in hot pants   .. dumb , dancing till we’re numb,  looking sick and sexy fine ,  forever young,  don’t mess with us … Jesus in my neck-a-lace.. ( that lyric perhaps best word play , worst image)

I KNOW there is great music getting produced .. but it doesn’t find its way into mainstream broadcast media, excepot ten tears later on Jimmy Kimmel spot light. That kinda resistance keeps us socially retrograde.

Neon and naked excepted, bright lights are typically flatly rejected, dismissed with the outrageous suggestion,  at the end of the day, you gotta give the people what they want.

< Sic: for forty years, under this logic, the people apparently wanted obesity, diabetes, etc..>

Well, if the over-ganda has precluded real choices,  education, and critical thinking regarding same, the people will choose, poorly, from a pair of options presented by the promoter / propagandist.   It helps if you obfuscate and /or outright lie ( ahem .. we never advertised tobacco to youth) .

Broadcasters have shucked off and danced away from any real civic sense, localism, and responsibility and have become ( like oil companies, tobacco companies, food companies ), vehicles for accrual of personal / corporate wealth . Our civic life and federal government are rife with corruption due to this influence. Money apparently only hears money. The major networks report mayhem but do not even quietly question the ”imperative” for multiple undeclared “wars” , or unchecked defense spending. There is a broad and concerted “attack” on all foundations of civil services, public education and civic sense.  Though, Ding Dong Osama’s dead. Thanks a billions.  America seems hell bent on eating itself!

OUR DREAM OF LIGHT NEEDS TO OUT SHINE, DISPELL THE DARK DREAM OF THIS CURRENT MISCGUIDED PLAN OF ENDLESS, HEADLESS, HEARTLESS PROFIT.

I KNOW we can all ring bells by writing and calling, gathering talking, dancing, hugging, envisioning , organizing relentlessly, to business  management, and especially cc’ing their advertisers, constituents.    Like making that small and precious donation to the Peace Project this week !

Baby Boomers/ Boomlets .. Get your Boom Back ON !    turn up YOUR volume, bass , and some reverb!

On the very UP side .. Ghanaian-born Blitz the Ambassador is introducing a new CD this week .. Native Sun, following up Stereotype ( 2009) .. the entire cd is being released freely on You Tube .. check out his afrobeat and horn-laced conscious hip hop. WE had the proviledge to interview him in youth led studio this last week, and I later   attended his all ages and searing venue at La Pena Cultural Center in Berkeley … side by side with Mark Bamuthi’s spoken word  and traditional Ghanaian drum and dance. Blistering beats and exuberant entertainment. Everyone grooving between 4 and 84.   Akwaaba!

POP is by definition, flash in the pan … and still any concept of deep pop seems almost to have vanished .. gets swallowed up …

Why doesn’t the heaviest of the heavy resonate these days …

One of our students, now 16, keenly observes, sic : “ since deregulation, the aesthetic of media has capitulated to free market mentality, that is make money, with no social mission in sight. OUCH!

We seem inured to hearing and feeling collectively on a mass scale … no focus, soul- fire  .. a gazillion media channels, including this one … clamoring for ears and eyes .. ayayay ….

We recently revisIted a few compendia of MUSICAL material by WAR ( Very Best of Double)  and the Temptations ( Psychedelic Souls) . And we re-added Wailing Souls’ Psychedelic Soul …   OMJ.

Notice that as you turn the dial, we do not commonly hear …

STOP THE KILLING NOW …

DO IT DO IT DO IT DO IT DO IT NOW  …

or

CHOP  WAR SPENDING NOW ..

CHOP IT CHOP IT CHOP IT CHOP IT CHOP IT CHOP IT NOW   …

“  TAX THE RICH NOW “

“ TAX GIANT CORPORATIONS NOW ” …

“ PUNISH AND REGULATE THE BANKERS NOW ”   …

“ HEAL THE PEOPLE NOW” …

“WORK HARD NOW”

“LIVE LOVE NOW”

I believe we have to hold  broadcasters accountable, same as any operator of public parks/space, resources, including oil/energy  companies , which have run amok, fomenting war and environmental fouling, including burning a hole in forever.  Thank you for the favor surfing through this .. be well, laugh more..  it will be great to hear from you   … = : ) ~

Here here, Corey! Or should I say here HEAR?! Can I get a HELL YEAH to the “stop the killing now, do it do it do it now”? You may want to include these on this year’s WorldOne t-shirts.

The Pilgrim CD will be available May 13th and I will send you one to send over the North Bay waves — it’s all light and love. And a little sad, minor Americana…xoxo

geez Corey, how does one tie in a response to poor nutrition, the media, mega corporations and Michael Moore? you’re making me think too deeply and i’ve also eaten too many hersheys to easily do that. why are these kids susceptible to all the negativity? u know the parents are having a lovely time economically. how much does that reduce a quality relationship with their kids? how about the schools? taking your own school/classes out of it, what goes on in the typical setting? how much bullying and other kinds of trauma take place? who runs the schools? the government. there’s a spiritual bunch. politically, what do most of the news media corporations want? more government. seen a positive story lately on vouchers? most of the D.C. parents favor them, but you won’t be seeing too much of them on t.v. What does michael more government want? what does bernie sanders want? raising the top rates to a combined statutory 48% is silly. if that # was used in a poll, we know what the response would be. Erskine Bowles, the leading democrat appointed by the prez to the fiscal commission, said “the people who say tax the rich aren’t paying attention”. some in those top brackets can avoid those rates and some can’t and pay too much and the top 2% are actually paying 39% combined, effective, average of their income and those under (like me) are paying 25% according to the Tax Foundation and overall government spending is now at 38% of personal income (T.F.’s spending freedom day). add in another 24% of indirect costs for the 63% total that ATR arrives at for the cost of government day estimate- august 20! the wealthy- corps., individuals or unions, often advocate for and can certainly game bigger government thru the tax code, regulatory, legal system or even the spending- now at $8 trillion total per year- $5.5 t. spending (bea table 3.1) and $2.5 t. for the indirect- $1.7 t. regulatory (SBA office of advocacy), another $400 billion of external tax code (GAO tax policy summary) and $600 billion excessive tort liability (Pacific Research Institute). how much does the $2(?)t. of waste take away from productive job formation? greenspan recently wrote in a paper called ‘Activism’ that “one half to two thirds of the post crisis shortfall in capital investment” was caused by government over-involvement. the unconnected, frustrated citizen loses and is still lead to believe others created the problem, so the scapegoating only increases and the mother of all financial bubbles- the $13.5 t. of government debt just grows and the inflation and unemployment will get even worse, but it’s ok because he or she still has the power to learn and unlearn and one day go into the polling booth and vote against the 40 year media hypocrisy of compassion thru government.

Looking forward RED !

and thanks you Rickles .. Ball o Confusion for sure … Michael and Bernie nail it their way .. not from the center .. often tipping to the shrill .. but sqawking-crowing to alert us to predation .. you obviously crunch the numbers, RESPECT ! .. of course the answer is NOT categorically more taxes .. the questions is … how to appropriately share the wealth .. as in commonwealth, health, public safety, SOCIAL security .. maybe I should add .. CLOSE THE LOOPHOLES NOW … when 5 Gigantor Oil Companies can extract record profits, in the billions, quarterly, from a Natural Planetary resource, for private gain, accruing to few, over which blood , lives and billions are spent, environments are fouled, market it like its “free” ( at almost $5. a gallon here locally, much more elsewhere on Earth) with the quasi-hazi-collusion of auto makers, buyers ( smart cars are weak!) and policy makers .. Ayayayay f—n yayay … there is so much muck in the middle …

what if …let’s rewind to one of Gandhi’s Seven Sins .. Wealth with out Work . and apply that as a baseline to OiI business .. shouldn’t a natural resource be a socially-shared enterprise ? some folks should likely make the bigger dough based on their contibutions to the science / biz ..

gotta peel off here to school this early am .. Bike to Work Day !

leaving this thread with a lyric from Femi Kuti .. I want to be free of Political Monsters … I will add .. may we all be free of Political and Corporate
Monsters …

Keep your fires lit, walk, talk, debate, dream , love …

Ride on and turn the people on .. = : ) ~

EVERYTHING is a natural resource. most economic activity is value added. after the oil mining comes the processing into.. the keyboard and the screen. should tech cos. “share” more? how many more jobs would that lose? sharing connotes voluntarism. u mean take and we’re already taking..a lot. anyone who learns the unmentioned data wouldn’t get distracted by the $34 billion of 1st quarter profits by the big 5. this is just news mngmt, directing our anger at a scapegoat. profits are about 6% of sales. total taxes and fees are almost equal to that $34 billion, maybe 20(?) cents per gallon. for federal taxes and fees alone, they paid 41% of pre-tax income vs. 27% for other industries. (there’s another 50 cents nat’l average tax per gallon on the drivers.) ending $1.3-1.8 billion of savings from annual production deductions just for oil is another diversion. all mfg industries get this so it’s dishonest to just call it “oil industry subsidies”. the wealth is also shared with shareholders- pension
funds included and will also get hit with a capital gain or dividend tax. some of the $34 billion is foreign profit- only $2 billion of exxon’s $11 billion was domestic. some of it is from increased natural gas production. some is because the crude price is high mostly due to the weak dollar because we’re spending and printing too much and higher demand and production heading down for next year. not sure about the safety of gulf drilling, but the 1002 area in alaska is no paradise! (unlike a good part of ANWR). that’s 1 MBD just sitting there, but instead we send $30 billion per year to Chavez, friend of Iran, for that same amount. he bought 100K ak-47s from russia last year. there’s a good security move on our part- speaking of “stop the wars”. if 2 MBD could be safely drilled here, that’s $60 billion, producing jobs. most importantly, the media will never compare the $34 billion to the $500 billion of government created waste out of the $2 trillion per year (previous post). there’s the real reason for the slow economy, the budget deficit and the trade deficit with the China. if this knowledge ever spread, would the politicians who created the problem be held to account and suffer the political consequences? all this negligence from the same media that advocated more, more central planning, doesn’t even have the integrity to admit they were wrong and still deflects attention to another target. who’s next?

Take a little trip and see

Ride on … a little higher and a little lower ..

here we come .. walking down the street, we get the funniest looks from everyone we meet ..

our 2011 worldOnefestival is good and truly on the way in he high arc of the coming summer, amidst and above and below all this tumoil .. and the constant reeling of the starry expanse … calling upon allawe to dream even deeper .. take a sad song and make it soooo much better ….   the fest image / art is to rich to crunch .. so here’s the home page

 http://worldoneradio.org/festphotos.html

e como mai .. let’s all cook up something good for our neighborhood …

what the world needs now is love sweet love … its the only thing that there’s just too little of  …..

Musicalities .. my students are creating their second (of four) compilation cd project .. and evolving their selections for broadcast ..

yesterday Cameron had me up against the ropes, hammering me with searing-street-wise and hiphopeful-dopeness, as I clicked and auditioned his cd, in solitude, and read the accompanying poetry / lyrics .. then… Pac drops … Until the End of Time .. I was weeping as the Principal popped in  …  swept away in the power in the music.. I did not bother to wipe the tears .. Dave is kul like that ..

this week our youth welcome, live,  Diablo Valley College  Theatre Co. / Alice in Wonderland, and Peggy Orenstein, author of Cindrella Ate My Daughter .. kidz!

Lots of discs spinning their magic here .. carramba ..fresh releases drenching us in Cumbia-Latin-Hip-Hop-R+B-Lounge-Lov … Ceelo Green, Bitter Sweet, Clorofila /Corridos Urbanos , Ana Tijoux, and Canyon Records’ chiken-skin Cheevers Topah ( Kiowa Prayer Songs) . We are thrilling as sets mix themselves at 3AM .. in beats we trust … revisitng all kinds of faves .. Yo Yo Ma and Finley Quaye .. FIJI’s searing and sweet Samoan Reggae … Free Design’s vocalese confections and Wanda Jackson’s late 50’s rockabilly … and if you want to just feel good .. listen again to Huey Lewis’ Power of Love  … and ride on .. TURN THE PEOPLE ON …

ViPS .. Did you see that banner ad for Anne McCue on the TW9 .. please check out Money in the Morning

ViPPS .. Further … we recommend you to the film Temple Grandin … what a story, celebrating a real live sheroic person and what craft in screen play ..I particularly resonated with the film, given my daytime work in public schools.                                                         = : ) ~

Amidst all the hoopla surrounding the Barry Bonds perjury case we can always free fall and lose ourselves in the lyrical melodic word and opposed to the written and contradicting palabras that are purposely meant to undermine and distort the truth.

I too recommend watching Claire Danes’ performance in the HBO film Temple Grandin. I gained so much insight from the film that at times during the film I dissed myself for not having the common sense to grasp the concept that everyone views the world differently.

My son is on the spectrum and it kills me that he and I may never be able to see things the same way, let alone sing in perfect harmony~

peace~

Love the bouncing and can’t wait to do some with you come July 4…

America where art we ?

America .. where art thou …

In the streets of Wisconsin .. defending basic workers rights, which, over decades, were logically supposed to accrue as corollary benefits for workers contribution of time and effort. Now yanked, by the same governments who gave away tax breaks, and thus state revenues, to corporations, political donors, and special corporate interests.

Michael Moore calls out the Corporate States of America  … and says of billionaires, media moguls ( as do other critical thinkers /actioneers) :

They control the message. By owning most of the media they have expertly convinced many Americans of few means to buy their version of the American Dream and to vote for their politicians. < See entire context of his letter/recitation:

http://www.michaelmoore.com/words/mike-friends-blog/america-is-not-broke

elsewhere … deregulation opened Pandora’s box for media “developers- buy + spinners” .. and in some cases straight-up extreme capital-ideologues …   this may account for why Drake-isms are ubiquitous on our high school campus and on urban commercial radio stations, in full expletive splatter of his glamorous boredom, while Roots-isms are not.

And Network Pleeease .. another program about Real Housewives of WTF– … emptyV… soul-deadening .. dumb and dumberer.. makes the population numb and numberer …

One is compelled to ask, where are the well produced TV programs about Real Soccer-Moms? Real Neighborhood Entrepreneurs, Farmers, Real Social Workers, Real Urban High School Teachers and Students, Real Hard-Working City Council Members ?

Maybe that’s the domain of local cable channels, if Comcast /Xfinity will leave any real room / promotion for them. And then, will the public value them more than the commercial jangle-juggernaut.

There is commercial media ( quarterly-sales-driven) and then there is soul-power-media … which one will you feed ?

Recently in communication with Farook @ MusicVoyager.com .. oh, you’ll have a good time in there “travelling” with host Jacob Edgar.  And you will likely enjoy getting more familiar with npr.org and www.npr.org/series/alt-latino/altlatino.

Working and visiting with Artist Photographer Fletcher Oakes locally is just totally, wow … electric-soul-power ..

Here’s a mandala image of Rocky Dawuni at worldOnefestival 2010 along with neighborhood actioneer and original Rosie-the-Riveter Mary Peace .. she’s also a great dancer !

And.. here’s another Fletcher Oake’s  image we will be employing on the main stage as a back drop in July 2011 ..

Having visited their studios last summer …A Mexican Radio Station has invited worldOne  to consult and guest host in their reggae programming .. que irie  !

worldOne served as dj for a memorial and community march last weekend, in Richmond, remembering a student who was felled in a wild-out vengeance drive by several weeks ago.  Family,  Students, Teachers, Principals, Police, Council- Members, Mayors, and community in attendance.   It was heavy-weight, and the musics bore the message .. Unfortunately we have evolved into a state of corporate fascism. And who, you may ask, educated all those corporate fascists to be smart enough to screw everybody out of everything?…Schoolteachers! Which proves the old quote that “no good deed goes unpunished”. Rock on workers of Wisconsin! Don’t quit fighting, you can win this!

Thank you for this blog and postings.
It is crazy that corporations and big business are in the position they are today.
What is the deal of a TV show about big business bosses going jr. and “making a difference” in the lower worker’s life? More propaganda to keep business in the “good”. Not working here.

Neighborhood Flava’s Good

Oh! Aunty Em …

There’s no place like home ..

(I worked in Hollywood, literally on the corner of Hollywood and Vine, for a few years, which seems like a curious dream.)

Friends and neighbors have lately pressed several cd’s and compilations into my hands lately, and I am grateful.

These gifts include:

John, of the Del Mars, who left his cd on the windshield of the worldOne L.U.V, at our community pool, where we like to swim.

Dr. Eve Ma who is working on a Flamenco music and dance compendium while she studies and resides alternately in Spain and Richmond.

Mark Hentlehoff, a fiend-in-common, who hit me in the third ear three sumptuous cd’s of his own compiling, while we were moving silk screens and holy-brick-a-brack for Artist Michael Roman:  Cachao + Cachaito, Indian Ragas + Bollywood , and Roy Ayers with Fela circa 1980.

Bob Duskis, of Six Degrees fame, sent along a deeply stirring single by Natasha Atlas, celebrating the spirit of the people of Egypt in their struggle to navigate their rebellion against the yoke of political oppression.

Our former neighbor Rick Leeds is on the East Coast working assiduously on economic policy, and his call-in made it into CSpan’s independent line..his Q+A e got worldOne remixed too, with some searing Ayers/Kuti

Our current Spring crop of high school aged radio broadcast students have wowed me too, as they begin to actively consider the act of broadcasting community radio vs personal listening / ipod. Flash!  Students readily and broadly agree that with all too rare exceptions, much of the glom we are subject to in pop is about nothing, and money/lust/greed greatly subverts musicality.( Sic: Halley Berry, the musical)  Still gets our attention though , huh? Ah, the advertising–entertainment complex. Ask JC Penny how that works! And has anyone noticed that fetching fotos of Kim K pop- up no matter what you search? LOL and ayayay.

Our young turk dj and collaborator, Ed Vincent is mixing up some of the zaniest and most interesting music mixes for his daily program Radio EdSoft Films. lots of twists and turns, hang on to your headphones.

We recently made a few project-focused mixes for a gem in our community, a Greek water aerobics instructor named Angela. She’s amazing. So, Debra Sue and I went into the studio to make eclectic mixes and voice zingers for her classes, which we have titled ”Angela’s Opadelic Aquatech !”. FUUUUN!

Our ECHS Media Academy is working on an update and upgrade of our extant .org site … yes, way overdue. The audio player options and functionality will be greatly enhanced … we’ll holla, but everything in a volunteer/educational  economy takes more time …  and that’s that’s likely more of a good thing, given the general results and vibz of fiscal-quarter-driven balance sheets.

Wherever you find yourself, please support and enjoy local media ( radio, tv, press) farms, stores, bookstores, coffee shops, restaurants, community centers, however you can. No matter how globally our awareness may reach, ultimately we will be  global yokels.  While the internet is kul, you live, we live where we live, and that’s our fo’ real superGvibraeconet, making eye and aura contact, with all its glorious and delicious nuances …

Our 13th annual worldOnefestival is on the way .. more details as the season rolls on, July 3-4 in Cerrito Vista Park. E como mai.

It’s a beautiful day in the neighborhood, a beautiful day for a neighbor …

and the flava’s good ..  Latifah

We Oneder …what do you particularly enjoy about your neighborhood ?

My neighborhood…hmmm…am really ready to get out of No. Hollywood, but I do have to admit the FOOD and restaurants around me are amazing :)

Wow…that’s a lot going on! Next time include some links to listen for the tunes if there are some!

This list puts ‘Morning Becomes Eclectic’ to SHAME! Wow, I wanna listen in, brother.

Good Morning! Mr. Berggruen, California Dreaming ..Calling ..

And Good Morning to you dear earthnic reader/comspirer  …

This morning I write through the blogoshere into the internet, and the indranet?

Noting that it is likely highly unlikely that I could deliver the missive below through conventional office protocols via Karstadt, the German retailing group, or Prisa, the Spanish media conglomerate that publishes El País and owns Le Monde…

In some confidence that a businessman of Mr. Berggruen’s stature, and our good luck, (see last paragraph, lol )  will comspire to place this otherwise “random” press reflection back through a press/media associate, into his hands, and thus his mind .. and thus, conscious internetception?

On the morning and day dedicated to the living memory of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. whose living example helped shape the conditions and the imperative for thence child Cawky, to continue to learn, conceive of, and implement worldOneradio today. Axé.

Add your good juju !  …. and otherwise do that gud vudu that udu …

and have a beautiful day in your neighborhood …

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Esteemed Mr. Berggruen, Good Morning, Good!
We read about you for the first time this am, and it is received with a bolt of intelligence and hands-on hope,  which we will reinterpret as Heathy Omnidirectional Policy Evolution, for California, and in turn, as an evolving contributing  model for the revitalization of  U.S. ecologeconomy and All-Americans Spirit.
The attached article ( link below) was in my worldOneradio.org in box, sent by an internet journalist friend, a stimulating read, on this Martin Luther KIng Day 2011. On the premise that Mr. Tett’s treatment is mostly fair and / or accurate, I respectfully call for your kind attention, Sir.
The day is relevant as CA school teacher’s / schools have the day off-on. I Live and Work in California these most recent 20 years or so , partly as a full time public school teacher(Spanish), and renter, so with millions of others I am “on the horns”  of the writhing economy.  We are compelled to work for less, personally pay for school supplies, and work on unpaid days off.  Good thing I ran with bulls (Cuidad Rodrigo, España, ‘77).  I am writing from personal history as a New York native, third child of one immigrant and one farmer-parent, after traveling the world a bit (through studies and crewing Pan American), and a student of both public and private schooling. I immersed in Radio broadcasting (Honolulu, LA, SF), due to a life-long-love of music, and art in dialogue, and likely the fact that I can accomplish other tasks, while listening.
Yesterday, while we were listening to some latin-soul-music-for-inspiration (Mucho Axé) , my beloved wife Debra Sue and I were driving back from several hours of snowshoeing in the Sierras when for the second time that day, we weaved along the 580, through fog-bound Cerros crowned with immobile wind-turbines, wrapped in gray other-worldly fog or illumined by bursts of blue sky and tangerine sunshine. My precious wife expressed how much those turbines represented to her symbolically, decades ago, adding inspiration for her to move here (from NYC), as she felt that in California, an envisioneer future was particularly possible, and arriving. She has since become a practitioner of Integrative and Chinese Herbal Medicines, specializing in Oncology/Immune System. For my part, I imagined reinventing how to reapply the miracle of radio broadcast as an entertaining palette for kultimutural arts and as a dialogue tool, and invested the last 16 years producing, hosting and teaching same, along with the creation of worldOnefestival. We are daily working Californians, subject to all the same rules, facilitations and setbacks, as millions.
And we want to be part of the constellation of solutions that will set this gorgeous land and its hopeful  peoples on a much higher ground in a connected web of social, cultural, educational, economic, and ecological policies .
I urgently see a role for regular inspiration and reinforcement of key intellectual and emotional “habits”  to wrest California and the nation from its travails. It’s more than time for a “frequency shift”, in virtually all phases of daily work and conception, of what we really need-to-be-up-to in our collective and connected lives through education, workplace and recreation, while we live as regular folks, in progressively more extraordinary mediocrity!  Thus, worldOneradio, now in its 16th year of daily volunteer San Francisco Bay Rim broadcast.
To wit, we oneder how we may constellate with your resonant interests and initiatives.
I culled these quotes from the article by Mr. Tett, these being representative of what caught my attention and compelled me to write for yours.
“California is in trouble – but I think California is ready.”
“But here [in the US] there is a very different attitude. The system is broken, people realise it’s very broken. In California they’re all unhappy.”
So what model does he want instead? Singapore? “I think it’s probably the best-run country in the world. It probably is on the authoritarian side and it needs to loosen up a little bit,” he observes. “But the ideal system is not necessarily the most exciting system. Probably, on average, boring is good for the average person.”
That medicine is presumably not intended for him, I observe; after all, he would not park in “boring” Singapore for long. “I am a hypocrite,” he admits. “But I am not thinking of me but what is good for most.”
He plans to continue with his investments but wants to put more effort into politics and philosophy; one model, he concedes, is George Soros, the financier and philanthropist. Since Berggruen does not have any children, he also plans to give his money away to his political think-tank and other reform causes. He is considering creating a media empire to provide an alternative to Rupert Murdoch’s, and promote civil society.
If Berggruen displays as much stubborn determination in pushing his ideas as he did with this bill, then maybe – just maybe – they might actually fly. In any case, I would like to dream so: right now, the western world certainly needs political magic.
A few random notes in closing this particular invitation to reach back. Singapore is fascinating. A baby orangutan pooped on my lap there once (at the zoo). Not at all unrecommendable, although I was likely just lucky.
The progressive, left-leaning press is savaging Jerry Brown, “making him” sound shrill. Very unpleasant, and more duality / contra-position/ hype  in media-wash, alas.
Some years ago, during a longish and kind of leisurely stroll on an SF pier ( out a side- door at an event) I pressed a worldOne cassette tape in Jerry Brown’s hand, from which I surmise he selected his theme music for his his nascent, erstwhile radio show (Us 3).
I genuinely hope you are already smiling and reaching for your smart-phone, laptop, and staff, to learn more about what we have in mind and heart as people and producers of positive and uplifting work in our community, an overt comspiracy toward …
Heathy Omnidirectional Policy Evolution.  Best always.
Happy New Orbit
Happy New Orbit …
We are embarked on a next spin around the sun, and we are NOT occupying the same “space” as one day ago, much less one year ago, as we are travelling at about 220 kilometers per second,  in this “new lap” around our  Sun, within our Milky Way Galaxy, which is traveling at @  1.34 million miles per hour, in the direction of the constellation Hydra.”
Whoa …   how do you keep your hair looking so styley ?
And we are heading for and into the vibration of the 5th (Mayan) Sun
While we are broadcasting all the good, the bad, and the ugly ( and or insipid) into our ears (plugged)  and flat-screens ( with attached “living” rooms), this universe is apparently about to bathe us in a new harmonic, a resonating frequency to evolve humanity to a new resting level of conscious perception. Ho’o make make!
Speaking of Makamake, it is a name given to a “dwarf” planet in the Kuiper’s belt off Neptune, along with Haumea, and others.
I awoke this morning with a powerful and delightful ki ho alu tune ( male duet, with chiming strings)   in my head this am. Perhaps my personal radio had attuned to those singing spheres?  A delightful way to awaken.  And yes, Makana confirms he received his 2001 worldOnefestival cassette.
We had a drenchingly enjoyable holli-day respite.. home and hearth, holli- grog, foods, friends and mistletoe, and arts/music ..  Juan and I repaired our home heater .. with a new (fan) belt from Kragen .. whose manager surprise-gifted us some funki-fun hats ( mine says DUB ).  How thoughtful and generous of him !
Debra Sue and I tromped and slid through several c-c-c-cold and gorgeous days around Truckee-Tahoe. When we were up there last week, it was @ ZERO degrees .. oh, and sunny. Some snow shoeing, XC, and down hill side-country boarding. WOW. Alpine beauty juxtaposed with the stop-waaait-go-chains-on-off
I – 8o, often a wintry mess, and otherwise our car’s wipers-doors-locks, froze.
We have been thoroughly enjoying AVATAR .. a gift from my son Taylor Keola, the deleted material is some of the BEST ! and was cut apparently, as  too sexy, political, shamanic … maybe would have changed the rating game .. or the pop! appeal game … anyway, at least its available to view ( in special edition) , …
The vision quest scene was bold and beyond …  I was equally stunned to hear some of the deepest, heaviest music in the “worm / vision” scene .. native music  Stearns and Sunsinger’s Singing Stones regularly broadcast via worldOneradio over many  years .. kul …
We got our to Biscuits and Blues on NYE, to take in a funk-jazz-fusion set with musician / journalist   Malcolm Marshall on stage with George Lacson Project .. ( pic of Malcolm and Corey inserted) watched SF fireworks from our home in El Cerrito…and we saddled up for a Peruvian friend’s birthday and salsa dance party .. Pacho fronts a brilliant full 10 pc band, Evolucion, ..  a great fiesta in Concord @ Club Sazon. VJ Bruno dropped this sizzler on the big screen … check out this video by Grupo Mania, a visual and dance floor fire starter:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-NyVruNMm8M&feature=fvw
I danced with Debra Sue till I sweat though my clothes. While she’s gotten pretty good turning S’s on that snowboard, and its even more important that we work our turns turn on the dance floor!
worldOnemixology recently includes a stunning new release from Danya River,
an artist in high arc of realization.. WOW! www.danyariver.com
Dianne Patterson, exhilarating in live performance, has just released a new indie CD project, redolent with local-global aspiration and Northern Cali Sierra Love.  www.dianepatterson.org
We have been savoring several arrivals through Porto Franco records .. including soaring vocal dreams by Kacey Johansing,  growling Seth Augustus, Mark Growden, and frenzied Brass Menazeri. All brilliant, in respective genre. www.portofrancorecords.com
A special mention here for label Intrepid Patrol, and Maria Volanté’s cd, Yo Soy Maria .. which thrilled us, bathed us in masterful, sensuous, Argentine-rooted fusions throughout and gave us another favorite-forever song  … in the form of Ultimos Acordes de la Fiesta. We keep coming back for another ride. We hope you will find it and enjoy it.
What joys and discoveries did you enjoy over the hollijolinuyear ? What intentions have to planned to advance and realize?
Wishing you a new orbit bursting with subtle and great all star vibz …             = : ) ~
Wishing bright blessed days ..
and dark sacred nights, throughout the rolling year …
We have been enthralled of late.. swooning and scintillatingly reconnected with the transcendental early 70’s synth-spiritualizer sounds of TONTO and Mssr. Malcolm Cecil, thanks to a three-bank-shot through a dear friend Loren and Stuart Maconie / BBC 4 ..  please enjoy a revelatory introduction? or revisit, and a listen  www.tontostudio.com and you may learn a lot you may not already know about Stevie Wonder’s wonder years, and the otherwise popularly hidden (co)creation of 4 epic albums, starting with Music of My Mind, through Songs in the Key of Life.
Thank you TONTO,  and endless appreciation!
Malcolm Cecil and Bob Margouleff.
New year sneak peek ahead .. looking forward to worldOnefestival 2011 .. pouring through Sister Carol’s catalyzing catalogue … no matter how hard they try they can’t sop reggae .. Isis survive any crisis … ital is vital is total …see: www.blackcinderellla.com ,.. more 2011 worldOnefestival details, as the season progress  .. you are invited !
Been thrilling to Makana these last several weeks… from his ki ho’alu roots through progressive fusions. Makana kindly preformed in worldOnefestival 2001, and we’ve  just sent him an (archived) original cassette of that performance. Yup. a cassette! LOL .  Tape/Cassette recording was the order of the day in 2001!   Querying if he had a player, he wrote me that he also keeps a Victrola!
Visiting with Elvon and Roxanne and their mustangs (quadruped kine) recently at home in both snow-covered  Shasta, and again the next week in our El Cerrito  heart-quarters ( sans ‘stangs) … Elvon (one ecclectic jazzrockfusion-loving Haida) put me onto Terje Rypdal ( Crime Scene ) and pointed me back-to-the-future Jeff Beck ( Emotion and Commotion). We chained up and rumbled around Tahoe basin and back this past weekend, swaying and swinging with encantadores Orquesta La Moderna Tradicion ( En Canto), danzonazos !
Finally picked up  afrobeat-living-legend-soul-star Tony Allen’s Lagos No Shaking, and relished another gem in his discography.  His relentlessly latticed, low-in-the-cut permutations and sparked by his potent social lyricisms.  Dug out a paper-sleeved recent arrival, kinda shuffled into an in-bound stack (o’ wax? er, polymer) and thank goodness I didn’t loose its slim-packaged-self amidst the constant musical ebbs and tides here  .. and I can urge South Asian /Middle Eastern attuned hEARtS to Shoshan Shye Ben-Tzur (EarthSynch). Jazz alert:  Colin Dean, bassist, has pressed a release titled Shiwasu … I hope you will love it, too.
Our beloved step mom Arlene chatted up her NYC taxi driver (driver-artist, natch) , and voila .. we are broadcasting selections by Afro-Haitian artist Luka Adjaffi.  And of course, as serendip would have it, we have been listening in to Robert Earl Keen, West Coast, VP Dance Hall scorchers ( bawdy) , and N.W.A. (more inflammatory scorch ). We have been listening the Wizard of Oz original soundtrack, which is somewhere up and overwhelming in its breadth, sensitivity, darkness, humor, joy and redemption.  Shakira’s new one does have a few hooky-pop-cumbia passages, and feels alas, formulaic, I suppose that may not be a big surprise or let-down.
And perhaps upsetter-ringer of the last few weeks has to be, with props to my high school chargé, Ultra Lounge’s (‘99) Wild Cool and Swinging Mrs. Miller. Yes, that Mrs. Miller, from the Johnny Carson-era Tonight Show, in this setting, thoroughly reinterpreting/ruining, in the best way possible, others’ smash hits from the Beatles to Nancy Sinatra.  Mrs Miller gives “Downtown” a whole nuther (fun house mirror) dimension.
So… you can see this is all one big musical blender-bender, whot?  And why not?
With all reverence aside .. and the exuberance and overindulgence of solstice-fueled and holli-grog-soaked festivities on all sides … designate a driver .. and have endless fun scanning nalgitas  ( or mistlefoot!?) at your holiday office parties …
have a happy holli jolli !  and getchusommadat kujuchagulia,  and yes …
Holy Nights ..  all star, all right …    = : ) ~
Corey,
Tonto’s Expanding Head Band is unreal!!
I’ve always “Wondered” how Stevie was able to bring that sound to the masses. I absolutely love the story behind how the producers worked him into a lather to get the vocals for “Living for the City” just right.
Bootsy Collins influence in funk-a-delic is storied and treasured. His reaction to what T.O.N.T.O. did for Stevie Wonder’s music is funk-a-delicious!!!
I may have to call upon Malcolm Cecil and The Original New Timbral Orchestra to produce “3″. That is…once Time Machine has been mastered and released.
great blog!!
