Paint The Town Green

I’m so excited about this post, I had to seriously fight off the urge to do it ALL IN CAPS LOCK.

THAT IS HOW ENTHUSIASTIC I AM ABOUT MOSS GRAFFITI.

In short, moss graffiti is an artistic adaptation of an old gardeners trick to influence the growth of moss by grinding it up into a paint mixture.

I came across this phenomenon in a book my aunt bought me a few years back called the Guerrilla Art Kit (buy it here. you wont regret it. P.S. Thank you Aunt Judy)

I can’t help but be excited about something that takes graffiti to a whole new living, breathing, level while marrying vandalism with beautification.

and apparently, it’s relatively easy to do:

  • mix moss, buttermilk, water, and sugar in a blender until it reaches a paint consistency.
  • apply “paint” with paintbrushes on things,
  • watch moss grow
  • …feel awesome?

(a more serious recipe can be found here: http://www.wikihow.com/Make-Moss-Graffit…)

With this Green revolution we seem to be in the middle of, I don’t see how this hasn’t caught on as the next urban art movement in LA. According to google images, not a whole lot of people have run with this, which blows my mind seeing as moss is cheaper than spray paint, better for the environment, and fricken 3D.

Have I convinced you to join me in a Moss Graffiti crew yet? In case you hadn’t noticed, that is my goal here.

Seriously… I NEED to see this catch on.

Leave your black hoodies and respiratory masks at home, and grab your floral aprons and brightly colored gardening crocs. Because tonight, we introduce LA to natures carpet.

(P.S. I was trying to think of clever word mash ups to call this… “Greenffiti”, “Mossterpieces”… If you can think of any of your own, feel free to include them in comments!)

  1. love it

  2. Woah…that is SO COOL! I want to mix me up a batch of moss paint!

  3. LOVE IT!!!! I will be spreading the word in Indiana. We shall no longer “Paint the town red” we will paint it green!

London is already on the way: http://www.treehugger.com/files/2011/06/vertical-wall-van-gogh.php

  4. I had to laugh when I saw this…..I just spent most of the week-end pressure washing all of the green scum off of my deck!….I guess it depends where and how you place it. I have always maintained that you can make art from ANYTHING! and this is just yet another possible medium!

  5. OH MY GOD. that van gogh wall is AMAZING. would it be a terrible idea to cover the outside of a house like that? ’cause I’m thinkin thats something i might want to look into.
@judith one mans green scum is another mans mossterpiece…?
