A creative blog by Heidi Huber on The Whole 9

Heidi Huber started her career with the sink or swim theory. Luckily she knows the freestyle which has taken her from the Chicago stage to behind the scenes in Los Angeles where she currently continues to tap as The Whole 9’s Chief of Everything Else.

What’s your favorite genre of music?

I really enjoy reading TW9 blog And The Beat Goes On.  I always learn something new about a musician or  certain song or genre, and Bad Heart serves up some true hidden gems via You Tube.  His posts cover many genres, some I am not that familiar with.

What’s your favorite genre of music?

  1. Americana, Rock n Roll, Delta Blues, Alternative. I would say that a lot of music I like doesn’t fall neatly into one category, but I love guitars, especially blues guitar. Lucinda Williams has been my musical hero for a long time, which makes sense because I grew up with my dad listening to Dylan and The Doors. I’d rather go see live music than do just about anything. I am always affected, I always feel changed in some way after a good show.

  2. Ok that’s a tough one to answer. I just love music, period. Depending on the mood…anything could go :)

  3. Although I enjoy all forms of musical expression~

Rock and Roll saved my soul~

    peace~

  4. I am in love with smooth jazz.

  5. hard riff rock’n'roll. you heard that guitar in monkey man and can’t you hear me knocking? jeezus! but great banjo licks are tough to beat, too.

  6. Classic Rock, American Standards, jazz (not smooth), club music, Jackson Browne, Eagles, Bowie, Stones, Motown, Lynrd Skynrd.. Punk, Leonard Cohen, Billy Idol, Bob Seger, most anything etc… except rap, hip-hop or the majority of country music…some yes…but no twangy stuff.

  7. Generally I’d say rock n roll and mostly the psychedelic and progressive genre’s of the 60’s and 70’s. Pink Floyd is my all time favorite band, though I really think their best overall album is the post Waters 1994 album The Division Bell. Also, Floyd front man David Gilmour’s solo work, On An Island, from 2006 is both mellow and rocked out so it mixes well in my playlists. I also really like 80’s new wave and Jpop. Nothing beats some Duran Duran or The Pillows when you feel like dancing or singing. Although, I’ve been listening to a lot of ambient and classical music when I’m working lately. Brian Eno, Wagner, Chuck Wilde, Tchaikovsky, Hans Zimmer, and Vangelis have been hitting the right chords with me as of late. Good tunes to listen too as background music when you are focusing on doing something else. I especially like Eno’s Apollo and Ambient Music For Airports, Wagner’s Ring Saga, and Zimmer’s Inception Soundtrack.

  8. I’m really into electronic these days along the lines of Aphex Twin, but am also into trip-hop like Massive Attack or Thievery Corporation. But, really, I like everything from 50 Cent to Dwight Yoakam.

Let it be known, however, that I have a Justin Bieber song on my iPod.

  9. i like most types of music. lately i have been using Pandora where you can just enter a song or band and they will create a playlist. I have found some cool music this way.

  10. Today my favorite is folk and blues. Now this is subject to change tomorrow or ten minutes from now depending on my current mood.

  11. Last night it was contemporary rock & thrash: Centro-Matic, The Heavy, HotSnakes, Black Eyes, Health, Love of Diagrams, Pinback, Silversun Pickups, A Place to Bury Strangers, The All American Rejects…

Today it’s roots & twigs: Otis Taylor, Tab Benoit, North Missippi Allstars, Cluthy Hopkins, Alvin Youngblood Hart, Corey Harris, Papa Mali, The Wood Brothers, The Blak Keys, Derek Trucks Band, Scrapomatic, CC Adcock…

Tomorrow it could be pretty things like Florence & The Machine, Swing Out Sister, Fleet Foxes, Sam & Ruby, The Decemberists, Atlas Sound, SiA, Diana Krall, Jazzanova, Romantica, Caetano Veloso, Simply Red, Eberhard Weber…

  12. Favorite? Hah, like I can ever answer a question about my favorite anything. Today though, maybe alt. hip hop.

  13. @ dangerous. Love derek trucks(saw him many times in a little college bar), Silersun Pickups is really cool and love The Decemberists.

  14. @jonathanc- Derek Trucks is great; love that rootsy, gravelly Southern roadhouse blues rock sound. Little college bar would be the best way to hear them. My favorite song of his is”Get What You Deserve”, “All I Do” and “Chevrolet” are good too. Silversun Pickups have been getting a lot of press lately (after many years as a local LA band where I saw them a bunch of times at small clubs in Silverlake). I like The Decemberists for their beautiful neo-Renaissance folk harmonies (I know they cite the 60’s British folk revival bands like Fairport Convention as an influence) and gorgeous instrumentation, including accordion and melodica.

  15. My heart is in love with the rock and roll, with that said I am a mellow indie rock kinda girl although my favorites are constantly changing anything with a guitar and melodic lyrics tickles my fancy.

  16. i love reggae buts its not my favorite genre
my vibe is everything to make one big genre called
    music.

    peace-in

  17. I love it all. I couldn’t even nail down a favorite genre. Recently caught up with some older stuff on Itunes-Paul Winter Consort(Icarus),Pat Travers Band(Crash and Burn). Pink floyd has always been one of my favorites(Wish You Were Here is so tasty). Then there’s the power of the classics(Bach, Beethoven, Mozart). I guess for the most part I lean more toward the more popular but don’t listen to the radio much. Caught a great jam over the airwaves one morning by Three Ring Circle called You Know What I Mean. Other groups I like include Yes, Chicago, Jethro Tull, Crack The Sky, Sting, Styx, U. K., The Manhatten Transfer, David Bowie, Gabriel, Collins, Genesis. OK, I feel much older now! :o )
