What are some legendary one-album wonders?

On April 15th, the rock band, Guns N’ Roses was inducted into the Rock n’Roll Hall of Fame.  While lead, Axl Rose, boycotted the ceremony, the rest of the band reunited for the event.  Now, correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t they only have one solid album? How does this qualify for hall of fame status?

There are a lot of one-hit wonders, but there are some legends that only had one album…What are some other legendary one-album wonders?

boston. peter frampton.

Like poorgood, I’m a big Peter Frampton fan, but in terms of more recent ‘legends’ I would have to nominate American recording artist Katy Perry’s debut album from 2008 “One of the Boys” …. Her album topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart for seven consecutive weeks, becoming the 1000th chart-topper of the Rock Era. And who can forget her already legendary song “I Kissed a girl a Girl”.

I kissed a girl and I liked it, the taste of her cherry chapstick
I kissed a girl just to try it, I hope my boyfriend don’t mind it
It felt so wrong, it felt so right, don’t mean I’m in love tonight

For all intense porpoises, The Sex Pistols only had one album. Jeff Buckley only completed one album. Blind Faith only released one album. If you’re going to allow Boston & Peter Frampton, then I’d add, My Bloody Valentine and Joy Division (2 album wonders) + arguably, The Velvet Underground (how could they ever live up to their first?). Less well known; The Secret Machines, Pretty Girls Make Graves, The Germs… Legendary to me: The Avalanches, Loveage, Faraquet, Richard Hell and the Voidoids,

What’s your favorite line of poetry?

Are you a Desirderata type (“Go placidly amid the noise and the haste and remember what peace there may be in silence.”) or are you more of a “…Quoth the Raven nevermore” type?  I do like a good Edgar Allan Poe, I must say…Annabel Lee was my favorite growing up.

‘…and i sang in my chains like the sea.’
dylan thomas

nobody has gotten down to the core of our short skate through this existence like thomas did with this one line that ends his masterpiece ‘fern hill.’

The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere/

This line is from the poem Second Coming by William Butler Yeats.

“A thousand Dreams within me softly burn” and “The only unbearble thing is that nothing is unbearable.” rimbaud

Too too many to pick from but this stuck with me from college:

I cannot rest from travel: I will drink
Life to the lees: all times I have enjoyed
Greatly, have suffered greatly, both with those
That loved me, and alone

Ulysses- Tennyson

What strange addiction do you have?

Last weekend, while attending the L.A. Times Festival of Books, I ran across a booth that simply stated, “Are you addicted to Facebook?”  I didn’t stop, just wondered what they were pimping.  Maybe a book to navigate the ever-changing waters of that site…

While an addiction to Facebook isn’t so strange these days, what strange addiction do you have?

does my wife qualify?

Burt’s Bee’s beeswax lip balm. The original one.

Handmade paper! I use a lot of it in my art. I can’t pass it by….have to buy it when I see it. I have drawers full of it….probably more than I will ever use and my collection continues to grow!

Have you ever been surprised about someone’s background?

I’m a big fan of 1970’s singer/songwriter, Carly Simon.  Until recently, I didn’t know she was the daughter of book publisher Richard L. Simon, co- founder of  Simon & Schuster.  Wow…no idea.

Recently, I was somewhat surprised to learn that a friend of mine had worked as a child spy during the Hutu and Tutsi civil war in Rwanda.

years ago, we were recording some songs, and someone suggested we put some fiddle on a few. they had a guy who charged next to nothing. so he came over. and his name was byron berline. and it sounded familiar, but then we learned he was the guy who did the great fiddle on the rolling stones’ country honk track.

I was very surprised to learn that one of my favorite VO talent guys who I used to hire a lot (Tim McIntire) was not only a former movie star (“American Hot Wax”, “The Sterile Cukoo”, “Brubaker”), but composed the soundtracks for “Jeremiah Johnson” and “A Boy and His Dog”. He looked like a strung out biker in leathers and Hells Angels vest and would always come into the studio on his harley half in the bag, but he had an incredible voice and was always very friendly and easy to direct. He never talked about his past, so I had no idea (even though I’d seen some of his movies, he looked a lot different and I didn’t recognize him). He died a couple years later (drugs and alcohol) and I learned at his funeral that he was also almost certainly Orson Welles’ illegitimate son by the actress, Jeanette Nolan.

What’s your favorite egg dish?

Eggs Benedict, without question, is my favorite egg dish.  But the eggs have to be done perfectly.  They’ve gotta be gooey goodness or that is one dish I will send back.

As you’re headed to Sunday brunch, what will you be ordering — what’s your favorite egg dish?

What movie deserves a sequel?

With the summer blockbusters just around the corner, there are sure to be some most unneeded sequels premiering…

What movie left you asking questions, left you wanting more? What movie deserves a sequel?

Should online entities be considered for Pulitzer Prizes?

The online newspaper, The Huffington Post, just received a Pulitzer Prize among speculation that since they’re online, they aren’t a real newspaper.  There’s all sorts of considerations that went into the decision, one is that they call themselves an online newspaper and not an online magazine.

Should online entities be considered for Pulitzer Prizes?

comments

i guess, but maybe there should be a new category within the pulitzer machine.

Why not? The distribution platform is irrelevant (imo). You win a Pulitzer for something original you’ve written that’s judged worthy of this prize. I assume The Huffington Post actually put out an original piece of award-worthy content. That’s good. So much of what THP does is to simply take articles from other sources (NY Times, etc.) and re-”publish” them. In that sense they’re only an aggregator taking others’ work without recompense and riding on the coattails of those who did the original stories.

Do you see parts of your mother or father in you?

Do you ever feel like you’re turning into your mother or father?  I say things sometimes and think, “That’s exactly what Mom would say…”  Physically, as my siblings and I age, we’re looking more like one parent or the other, but also looking alike!  It’s scary, in a cool way.

Do you see parts of your mother or father in you?

-both, for sure i ain’t adopted

now that i’ve shaved off my beard, my dad is there every time i look in the mirror.

Yep…and now having four parents to choose from (two biological, two adopted) there’s even more to see ;-)

One of the miracles of human existence is how we grow to be more like our parents! There are spiritual teachers such as Louise Hay who believe that we choose our parents.

Though I carry major influences from all three of my parents–Mother, Father, Stepfather, I am MOST like my biological Father.
Interesting to be sure, as I didn’t grow up with him.
Truly a GENETIC thing!

What inventions have changed a lot since their inception?

Yesterday, we discussed what inventions haven’t changed much since their inception.  Today, we talk about Change!  Being from a farm, the tractor has definitely changed a lot since its inception.  Gone are the days of dust-covered arms and farmer tans…my brother, (a farmer) rides in an air-conditioned, completely computerized tractor cab with a television/DVD player in it!

Tell me, you city folk: What inventions have changed a lot since their inception?

computers. the internet. birth control.

wow, Iused explorer and got in! haven’t been able to sign into this in two weeks. Let’s see, what was the question? Oh, yeah. Inventions that have changed…..What about the phone?
Alexander Graham Bell’s original telephone isn’t even recognizeable today. My grandkids saw one the other day and asked me what it was! They were amazed. My response was “That little rectangular piece of plastic you carry in your pocket doesn’t look like any phone that I knew of when I was your age…..and a phone was meant to TALK on! I realy am such an old fossil!

Theres a lot of them, pretty much anything involving technology; trains, planes and automobiles… phones, tvs, copiers, ‘records’, video ‘cassettes’, and of course, most dear to my heart… cameras!

What invention hasn’t changed since inception?

While there have been improvements, the chair has pretty much stayed the same since it were invented.  Those that chose to, changed up the materials, made things more ergonomic maybe, but this invention began solid so there hasn’t been much need to completely change it.

Throw a few more items on the table and tell me: what invention hasn’t changed much since inception?

- hmm, dicaprio?

Garden hoes have pretty much stayed the same. As have axes, sledge hammers, shovels. Some change in ergonomic design but all are basically the same as they were when they were invented (at least as far as I know).

the wheel. toilet paper. death.

let’s not forget sex and taxes while we’re at it. Oh, and Keith Richards.
