A creative blog by Lisa Schultz on The Whole 9

Lisa Schultz has spent a lifetime observing the human parade. Now at the helm of The Whole 9 and The Peace Project, she reports in on her findings and asks that you join in.

Love is Love…

“Love is love.” read one of my texts to Spanish Filmmaker Sergi Agusti during our recent trip to Sierra Leone.  Even though I’m sure he’s used to my cryptic texts and I like to delude myself that he understands at least some of them, in my more contemplative moments I realize he’s probably usually scratching his head and wondering what the hell I’m talking about.

This particular one was sent while I was reviewing the photos of the party that we did for our Peace children — a party attended by about 40 parents, guardians and children — at least 15 of which were conspicuously missing something most of us take for granted.

Now one might think that the most noticeable thing is what wasn’t there, but what I noticed most is what was there…

The tender touch of the fathers…

And the hopeful eyes of the children…

As I look back on this trip years from now, I’m sure I’ll remember many things, but perhaps the most important will be…

Obai and Tejan hanging out in my room on Sunday and putting together the “beginner’s” telescope.

Obai greeting Bekiss.  Her smile wasn’t captured on film, but it was just as joyful.

I often tell others that the people of Sierra Leone have taught me more than I will ever teach them — one of the most important being…

Love is love…

Happy Belated Valentine’s Day from their hearts through my heart to yours.

“Through creativity and community, we can change the world.”

  1. Tears again . . . .

  2. The longer you look at the photos you will see they are both heart-warming and heart-breaking. Love to see these kids with new crutches!

  3. OMG Lisa, you’re getting me, the dangerously rational cynic, all choked up. Just beautiful.

  5. WOW! The smiles speak volumes! When you expect nothing, don’t feel “entitled” to anything, then every little thing is an added plus and it shows in these poeple.
    Thank you, Lisa
